I dug up an ants nest, when clearing a bit of ground to plant an elder. As soon as I had watered in the elder, the birds moved in to help themselves to an ant banquet :)

I was in Littleborough on Thursday, and would swear I could hear swifts screaming but couldn't see them.

Apparently there were loads of cuckoos around Staveley today, but a calf ping and a DNF meant I missed them :-(

I’ve put this photo behind a spoiler tag because it’s not very nice. I found three dead baby birds in the garden this morning. They are quite large, about 4 inches from beak to tail and featherless, so not long hatched. I wondered if anyone might have an idea ehat type of bird they might have been and how they would have got there? There are no overhanging trees. Would they have been chucked from a nest by parents or another bird?
