And earlier, on the way out, we'd seen a kestrel. And lots of jackdaws around, leaving it alone. Didn't seem worried at all.

Until the kestrel saw something, swooped and caught it. When it was immediatley mobbed by all the jackdaws, on the ground, and by the looks of it, lost it's catch, gave up and moved on, leaving the jackdwas fighting & squabbling over it.

We have had quite the weekend for kestrels. Saw another one hovering over the road as we drove to our friend’s farm in Longframlington. Then as we were leaving we saw one swoop down from a hedge onto the grass verge by the road and fly off with a mouse or vole in its talons.

Nice chough pic um.

I saw the first swallow near one of my bars yesterday and finally heard my first cuckoo today.

There is quite a success story in recent years in Cornwall with regard to creating suitable habitat (closely grazed grassland) and getting numbers to increase. They are also present in places like Wales and Islay.

Interesting ff. Thanks

Loads of sanderling on the beach tonight plus three turnstone. Bizarrely a sparrowhawk flew across the sand and over the bay

As far as I could see, it wasn't ringed. The pics support that.
Which suggests either an interloper (unlikely) or one that's been bred but the project isn't aware of, or failed to ring?
Have reported as it seems to be outside the immediate 'known' areas, by about 30 miles, so maybe that's no much if they get across to Wales.

I think the flinky team have seen Chough in Wales. Rick Stein was chatting to the Cornish Wildlife Trust lot about Chough reintroduction / breeding down there the other day on telly….

Excellent Chuffage 😀
