I love yellowhammers too - growing up with my grandma's farm in the fens they were a normal summer backdrop - they should be common here, but this is the first year it seems like they are present at the density they should be

Yellowhammers aren't common round here, but the uk population isn't what it once was. Mostly down to changes in farming practices, I believe.

HowFar?
I stopped to eat an apple on the way home from Enniskillen this evening and when I went to get back on the bike there was a badger staring at me from the other side of the road. We looked at each for a while and then it took itself off through a gap in the hedge and into the field.

And I'm now pretty certain I know where the kingfisher nest is.

Nice picture DT. I love those dales, beautiful places and delightful running.

Another trip out to Fairburn Ings today and the drive was rewarded by a good collection of birds including a Cattle Egret, Black-necked Grebe (they've bred there), Lesser Whitethroat, Spoonbills, Avocet and Green Woodpecker.

J2R - we have at least two hedgehogs here too. We mainly see them on camera (I leave it by their food bowl overnight) but I've seen them a couple of times with my own eyes which I was very excited about :)
