Sounds ace. I think we’ve been ‘proper’ birdwatching once this year. In fairness we did see our first spoonbills spoon 🥄

I feel a bit bashful that this was another bit of 'twitching', of a kind I said I didn't do. That is, a trip to a specific place in the hope of seeing a particular bird of interest which has been reported to be there. Beginning of a slippery slope? Still, it's better than if I'd driven out to some industrial estate, which is where waxwings often hang out. At least where we were was somewhere you'd go for a nice walk anyway.

Barn owl, countless geese and a couple of bats on this evening’s dog walk- and owl has just screeched her way past my bathroom window making me jump

Twitching to me is going to see a (single) bird that’s been reported (possibly somewhere it would never be) to give you a tick on a list. Going somewhere nice to see something that belongs there is cool (imho)

Only my opinion (I have been watching birds for nearly 50 years but don’t keep lists). I’m what I think of as a ‘keen amateur’

Saw some oystercatchers on my walk this afternoon and lots of skeins of geese flying over but couldn't work out which ones they were.

Brent geese are a possibility? Small and relatively dark coloured

That's the ones I was thinking of DT, one skein flew right overhead and they were very dark in colour.

They’re the smallest goose. When I used to go to see Stef in her Southampton days we saw they regularly around Keyhaven and Jevington
