Spotted two Jays in our local park today. Lived here two years and am in the park 1/2 times a day running or with the dog and never seen them there before which is quite exciting as they aren’t as common up here (Northumberland) as further south in the country.

4 short-eared and a little owl this afternoon. My first ever seo in the wild. Plus large flicks of goldfinch, lapwing and corvids. And a large number of photos to sort through! |

Huge flock of fieldfare have just about cleared the berries off my half dozen little rowan trees this morning . There was one redwing with them, balancing delicately on the bendier tips, away from the big bruisers. They were joined by a single blackbird, one starling, and a baffled chaffinch trying to work out what the fuss was about. I have quite a few dark billed male blackbirds about; does that reliably mean they are migrants? |

Could also be first Winter British blackbirds, they have dark bills too. Look out for dark bill/yellow eye ring combo to spot a Northern European visitor.

Interesting. So in autumn, adult British males have yellow bills, yellow eye ring, 1y British males have dark bills and dark eye ring, and so do 1y coninental males? But later in the winter the Brit 1y birds start to yellow up first? Are we saying full adult continental males have dark bill / yellow eye ring for the entire autumn and winter? Confusing. |

The conventional wisdom goes something like that, yes, but with so much age, seasonal and geographical variation both within as well as between different populations, IDing homegrown vs. visiting birds is something of a nightmare without ringing data. Nice to speculate though
