Had a classic example of a buzzard "hovering" today. Stopped my long run for about 5 mins to watch! Although it's not really hovering - it was more a case of surfing on the wind about 5 meters away.

Lots of swallows quartering a field today. I suspect they are about to pick up their suitcases and head for sunshine.

Saw what I’m fairly certain was my first ever hobby today. Amazing slim and agile med sized hawk / falcon type bird making easy work of flying in incredibly windy conditions. Slightly smaller than a kestrel with a generally pointy appearance - this was a Ferrari versus a Porsche. iirc hobby can catch swifts and this bird looked well capable of that. If you’re in the road works on the M1 near the Trent / East Mids airport area keep them peeled ;)

They're amazing birds, real athletes. We're lucky enough to have them nesting not far away.

DT, sounds very plausible. I've seen them going over house martins at Minsmere - impressive!

The storm winds have blown a Grey Phalarope into the res here. It's been around for over 24 hours now and had quite an audience this morning.

There were still Swallows around on Wednesday but I've not seen any since the storms hit.

We’re in Devon and I saw a bunch of sand martin heading south very purposely

Is the phalarope doing the spinning round in circles ff? The only one I’ve seen was incredibly confiding and spinning like a top B-)

No spinning DT, I think it might be just the Red-necked that does that. It was reasonably confiding but constantly on the move which was not making life easy for the assembled audience today.
