Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Oh XB sorry to hear this. You have been doing so well and been so strong. Can’t be an easy thing for a son to see his mother go through.

Oh dear, XB, sympathise with you on this. A digestive incident was one of the things that convinced Mum to move into the care home.

I’ve been lurking here since my dad has some health problems Christmas before last. I just wanted to say thank you for all the useful bits of information I’ve picked up along the way, especially grast_girl’s tip about the ‘what to do when someone dies’ link. My father had a massive stroke towards the end of last week and died the next day - I would have had no clue where to begin with the death admin without this thread, which has also given me some ideas for supporting ma, who was in a very worrying state for a couple of days - still is, not surprisingly, but not as bad as she was. Didn’t expect this to happen, as he was mostly very healthy. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to all.

About This Thread

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
