Good stuff, Mandymoo. That's a lot of where I hear of their advantage - by softening the impact of hills or headwinds, it helps those ride when they otherwise would very quickly struggle, and so on aggregate gives more activity.

I can also think of quite a few couples for whom it makes it possible for them to ride together when it otherwise probably wouldn't be enjoyable for one or both parties.

We ventured into the world of E bikes late last year, with a bakfiets (cargo bike). We even managed a ride with YP in the bucket of it a few weeks ago! In so many ways easier to use around the city than a car would be.

I do love my Ebike.

I still break a sweat and get a bit puggled, but nothing is insurmountable.... my target is to use it for more than one commute a week.

I lack a bit of confidence, so having the torque to get away from the lights a little quicker is good for me. Sometimes I find the flightiness of it a bit too much on the bike gates and chiccanes, but I am getting better at reading these and adjust accordingly.

When you say flighty MazH - do you have a hub motor that typically responds simply to cadence, or a hub motor that typically responds to the pressure you put on the pedals? I can imagine the former might feel flighty on occasion.

Yeah, the former, rear hub responds to any pedal motion....

A small price to pay!

I have a Halfords bike, please don't judge.
It's a Carrera Impel 2(i think) - so decent spec and really good aftercare. I think Halfords get a bad rep. Quite heavy tho..... (£1.6k so still a very considered purchase)

(a bit lighter than the first one I bought, which was a Specialized Vado. I returned it. £2.2k, I wanted to be sure!)

My partner was able to get a Ribble E-Gravel on immediate delivery which is what I wanted (Ribble do a gravel low top tube for ladies) but I didn't want to wait 16 weeks.

Ooh, I'm envious of your partner, MazH. I was thinking about a gravel ebike myself. i follow a chap on youtube with an orbea gain, which has the same motor. It's great except when it bogs down on steep hills, because you need to keep the cadence up with that simple cadence sensor for the motor to deliver. I currently ride a Cannondale Neo, which has a BB motor and, since I live in a hilly area, I think I might miss a bike that doesn't have torque sensing.

My wife has the Ribble e-gravel and loves it. She's pretty fit but the hills round here are brutal and it saves her knees and enables her to take on really long rides without stressing over getting back home!

Good to hear that, jda. I would be riding home up the biggest hill in town, after a run at sea level, as one of my staple rides. That's the only place I can find anywhere flattish to do intervals. I've seen 2022 Scott bikes with the same motor going “cheap” and I am tempted.

I'm thinking of getting an e-bike for general errands around town and marginally further afield. But I'm worried about the security aspects - are they more likely to get nicked than normal bikes if you park them somewhere for a couple of hours? What do people do about security?

I must admit I don't leave mine for very long unless it is in view. I have a gold d lock that I do use when I need to.

Same here, when we have left it, it's been a d lock and chained to OH's bike too

How many Fetchies are e-bike users?

Have recently converted, due to arthritus making cycling longer distances not so much fun, and have to say it has been a game changer for me. I can't keep off the bike.

Am not using it on full power all the time, have actually been out with the power switched off and just put on for assistance with the hills, but it has really made me get outside cycling again more. Have pretty much abandoned the car lately, even cycled over the cliffs cycle path ...
