He was a staggering county player with a good ODI record who just happened to be found out against some of the finest bowlers of all time. When your first two home series are against Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh, Wasim, Waqar etc, anyone can have a rough trot. I think he would have done better now with the better support.

Of course, the 7-year wait built up the anticipation such that all England fans thought that the second coming was about to happen. Anything less than a demolition job century on debut would have been a let down. Can't have helped.

I forgot about Chris Schofield! I went to his test debut at Lord's in 2000 and he didn't bowl because England skittled out Zimbabwe for next to nothing in both innings. I remember him getting a pasting in the second test and was never seen again even though he hit a half century.

I think what we're proving here is the huge step up from county cricket to the international scene. Some players relish the big stage and thrive, others are completely out of their depth. You don't know until you try them.

Warnie was saying yesterday in his first test match he went for something stupid like 100/0. Border had faith in him tho...Imagine how different the cricket world would have been if Australia had decided to bin him after the first test. The world would be full of folk bowling like Muralitharan...

Warne had to bowl at Shastri, Azharuddin, Tendulker and Vengsarker in his first test so the chances of failure were quite high! I bet he didn't serve up long hops and full tosses at the rate Kerrigan did yesterday.

What, throwing? Good job I put that question mark, eh? ;)

Was Derek Pringle on that list? There were a whole stream of players who were going to be the next Ian Botham...but none of them were...

Anyone remember Andy Lloyd? Now that was a shame...

I suppose that there are very few sides which feature 11 world-class players; it's then a case of how much you can make out of the merely talented fillers.

If Kerrigan gets the chop longer term I'll not be mithered as he will be taking wickets for Lancashire.
