Wriggling Snake
Top 20 in the county Averages for Div 1

Bell
Bairstow
Malan (Who I like)
Bresnan
Read
Leaning (Yorks)
Voges
Finch
Hain
Pujara
Muchall
Machan
Taylor (Notts)
Wright
Mitchell
Westwood
Gatting
Gale
Hales
Borthwick

I think there is not that much to choose from and Bairstow was obvious.

Hain will be very good indeed; best the Bears have had in a long while (see also Laurie Evans)

I'm off the the second Women's ODI tomorrow, although having checked the weather on the BBC a late start and reduced overs is in prospect. On Friday I'm heading to Northampton for their double header v Durham in the T20 (looking a total washout at the mo) & The Royal London One-Day Cup on Saturday, for which sunny intervals is the forecast.

I see there's been a lot of rubbish being discussed on here again. Glad I ignored most of it.

WS. You need to filter those stats. Bell top because he's played 1 county game, had 1 inns and scored 111.

Also, I notice 2 Australians....

So let's say English only. Min 5 innings. Note that because there are county games ongoing (i.e. Yorkshire marching to another victory...), these may change slightly.

1. J Bairstow, Yorks (11inns, 906runs, 100.66ave)
2. D Malan, Midds (5inns, 311runs, 77.75ave)
3. T Bresnan, Yorks (12inns, 540runs, 60.00 ave)
4. C Read, Notts (13inns, 584runs, 58.40ave)
5. J Leaning, Yorks (16inns, 752runs, 57.84ave)
6. S Hain, Warks (11inns, 476runs, 52.88ave)
7. G Muchall, Durham (11inns, 438runs, 48.66ave)
8. M Machan, Sussex (17inns, 774runs, 45.52)
9. J Taylor
10. L Wright
11. D Mitchell

Now looking at those, Hain, Leaning, and perhaps Machan are too young to be thrown into an England team just yet. Give them at least another season in CC.

Malan hasn't played enough games to be selected.

You wouldn't select Bresnan or Read as a specialist batsman. Muchall probably too old. Same for Luke Wright

That leaves you with Bairstow (outstanding this season), then Taylor or Mitchell, who are also both proven performers over multiple seasons.

So there are options.

Looking at Div 2 aves, ignoring KP (who's average is massively biased by the one score he managed to make) - too old and not worth the aggro anyway - you're left looking at Steven Davies or Jason Roy.

Nobody else in Div2 eligible or has really played enough games. Shows the difference in class between the 2 divs now as well - all the top players in the div 2 aves are overseas - meaning counties are having to buy in.

I'm not the one who suggested a recall for Paul Collingwood.....

And it wasn't just you, TMW, although you did hit the high point.

And it isn't about averages, it's about technique and temperament.

Trescothick never topped the averages but was a great all-format opener until he went a bit hatstand

Indeed, which is why I suggested Mitchell and Taylor above...

I think Trescothick has actually topped the county averages by the way.

And I suggest you don't use the term "hatstand" to refer to mental illness. As someone who suffers in that area, it's incredibly insulting. Try having some empathy.

Although yes, he topped the averages after being selected for England - not before - and yes, he wasn't the best batsman in the CC when selected for England.

Just to clarify.
