Haddin's daughter, who was 1 or 2 at the time, had cancer about 18 months ago, necessitating, chemo, operations, bone marrow transplant and appeared to be in remission. So "personal reasons" for missing an ashes test might unfortunately turn out to be quite serious. Let's hope not.

Their team is stronger without Haddin and Watson on current form anyway. I'd have been celebrating if they were still playing.

Indeed, and they have palyed and missed and got a flyer. I imagine once the sun comes out and the pitch flattens, it'll be a long day.....
this is it, if they get a big score..we'll have to be on our game........Vaughan has said all along, the results will go with the toss

Morning Wrigglers, morning everyone.
No great surprises in either of the teams (though I reserve judgment about Starc) and the pitch looks batsman-friendly. We really do need 2 or three quick wickets...

England will have to bat incredibly badly to lose this test match. A batsman's paradise.
