No. Vaughan was Captain before KP became newsworthy. |

Had a discussion with a mate about how many of England's team would get in the Aussie's one-day squad, never mind team. Didn't get past one, maybe Ali for Doherty and Anderson for Cummins, two halfs.

IMO KP's stats are misleading. I think you'll find that average is hugely skewed by his scores at the start of his test career. If they were looked at over just the second half i think you'd find it was far lower, both because he got too cocky for his own good plus because bowlers began to work him out. I agree entirely that he was (is?) a huge natural talent and with better captains/managers/coaches he could still be a world beater for England. However if we had a better management team we'd also be in a far better position without KP too! |

Trott, yes as opener with Cook in the Ashes. KP career stats: stats.espncricinfo.com Cumulative average plot. His average fluctates between 47.5 and 50 for most of his career - his end form (which could be explained by his knee issues) only brought his average down to a point where it had been before. He had had a few troughs down to that lower figure. His high point came after 25 tests on the back of his 226 against the Windies. |

England ODI squad. No bowlers, possibly Ali, possibly Buttler, next closest is Joe Root.

But that's typical 'KP's stats are misleading'. 100+ tests, 47 runs and we're damning him with the faintest possible praise. Anyone playing that many tests over that amount of time will have ebbs and flows of form, but with that how good must the ebb have been if after all the flows he made 47 every time he strode up to the crease. So does that mean every batsman's stats are misleading? Or are other batsman allowed periods of poor form but not KP? EVery batsman gets out and they all have ways that they are typically undone - and whenever a batsman plays enough to show such a pattern, every decent bowling attack will probe that weakness relentlessly. It's not just KP that got worked out to some extent, and even then the 100 tests/47 ave tells you he won the battle more often than not, even with known weaknesses. |

My point exactly Sarrers. I think you'll find a much bigger drop off in Cook's form since 2011/12 than KP ever experienced, but everyone wants him to open in the test side. Myself included.

stats.espncricinfo.com After his initial bright start, Cook only touched an average of 50 once - and briefly before dropping to his current average of around 46. |
