This is interesting regarding how important Leach was and the job replacing him is: "However, that theory is debunked by the enhanced role Leach has played in England's run of 11 wins in 13 Tests. He is the only bowler to have played in every match, sending down over 1,000 deliveries more than any other man." bbc.co.uk |

Well. Still 28 isn't too bad for an opener/middle order/lower middle order/pinch hitter with 195 wickets. Brearley 1442 test runs! He has taken a bit of flak as he isn’t quite good enough to be locked down in either role but as a package he is way better than say a Graeme hick, Ashley Giles or Monty Panesar |

Monty Paneaser was pretty decent and easily good enough to hold the spin role down. He'd have had more tests if his competition wasn't Swann at his peak.

Thing with Moeen is he didn't really see himself as a front line spinner and thought he was a batter and I'm sure that contributed to confidence issues at times and added pressure.

Monty would have been fine if he could bat or field. Since he was useless at both, his opportunities were limited.

Swann was also the better bowler TBF so with his additional skills, it wasn't a tough choice in hindsight.

I still have memories of John Emburey and Phil Edmonds grinding out the lower order in the 1985 Ashes win.

Panesar at his best was a top bowler. But as said above his fielding and batting, although both improved, were severe weaknesses. Plus swann came along.

But it should be said it was the pair of them that won that landmark series in India.
