I’m starting to think that the real ‘why are we doing this?’ anomaly is the 50 over game. T20 and cricket are sufficiently different that I can grudgingly accept there is a place for both of them.

I liked the 50 over World Cup. Didn’t hurt England winning. There’s enough time for some change of pace and momentum.

Everything played in coloured clothing, with a white ball, is the cricket equivalent of rugby 7's.
Fast, exciting and requiring a different skill set from the players*, it obviously has it's place, but it is a different sport and will always be less important than the real game.
* backs (not line and length bowlers, side on, high elbow batsmen or pug ugly, cauliflower earred props, you know...., real players)
