Fielding is the funniest thing to watch in lower levels of cricket. Actually taking a catch is a real cause for celebration.

I love watching a fielder run towards a ball, decide not to dive, then turn round and run after it all the way to the boundary

I enjoy the running towards a potential catch attempting to appear to be giving everything but ensuring they don’t quite have the pace to get there 😊

The best one I ever saw was during an Evening League* match 30 odd years ago.

Our opponents had a long haired studenty type fielding on the boundary. Every time he stopped the ball, he would toss himself a catch before casually throwing it back in. Our batsmen** noticed and next time it went to him, they ran another while he was messing about. Their wicket keeper went batshit and threatened him with all manner of things. Two overs later, he did it again, this time our lads ran one for the catch and another for the throw, turning a single into three. The wicket keeper never said a word, just took his gloves off, walked out to the boundary and punched the fielder.

* 15 x 8 ball overs, T20 before T20 existed

** Note to modern commentators: Batsmen, not batters

It seems BBC spoilt the fun and have changed it to needing to win by 308, still impossible but not as fun as 316 was.

The running away from the wicket, trying to catch a skier coming from over your shoulder, giving it you all, going round and round and still missing it by a couple of yards is best.

Or running after a spinning ball and falling over, that's great.

Sounds like the Fetch XI would at least be enthusiastic in the field; plenty willing to put in serious yardage in the outfield I suspect!
