I quite like the way they do kids cricket. 10 players per side, all bat in pairs for a fixed period (2 or 4 overs typically). All sides start with a fixed score (say 100), and you score for scoring runs, and lose runs for wickets. If you're out, you continue batting but just lose the runs. Then after 2 or 4 overs, the next pair come in. Repeat x5 and everyone has had a batting innings. Bowling rotates on a similar pattern. Makes quite a nice way to play garden cricket with the family too - you can handicap via starting scores, but don't get the problem of the 19 y/o bowling out the 5y/o every time so they don't get to bat for longer than a single delivery each time! |

Most of our games you would have won by declaring before the first ball with your 100 intact...

That just reminded me of an all-rounder competition I remember seeing on telly in the eighties. I've just looked it up - it was called the Silk Cut Challenge (ffs). It had some really big names - here's a pic I found: media.gettyimages.com |

LOL @ TRO's insightful unpicking of strategy! (I don't think declaring is allowed - though perhaps Boycott would have done well with a robust defence for a few overs and an absence of scoring).

I've declared in local League games. We get to 300, I declare... (back in the day). Team grumbles. Look lads, if we can't defend 300 we deserve to lose AND we will be in the pub sooner. |

When I played in the Notts Premier League back in the day, it had the same rules as the Cheshire League. West Indian Cavaliers used to bat for 35 overs, score 300, then declare and have 55 overs to get you out or bounce you into submission.

Those kinds of rules used to be very common, though many leagues play limited overs now. The East League in Scotland switched to limited overs (40/45/50 depending on division) about 15 years ago, and I think all the Scottish leagues now play limited overs.
