Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Australia fast bowler James Pattinson will miss the Ashes series following a recurrence of a back injury.

Hopefully Doug the Rug will replace him

There is a fair bit of pessimism on this thread but even without Stokes England have a number of quality cricketers. Spent 30 minutes or so checking out some stats.

Joe Root: World class batsman with a batting average of 60.75 as captain.
James Anderson: Over 500 career wickets, with 126 wickets at 20.35 since January 2015.
Alistair Cook: Most test runs for England (11,629) and averages 49.53 in Australia.
Jonny Bairstow: averaging 46.02 as wicketkeeper in test cricket.
Stuart Broad: Almost 400 test wickets and an innings best of 8 for 15 against Australia.
Moeen Ali: 30 wickets at 21.29 in 2017 and averaging 68.54 batting at 7 which is his most likely batting position without Stokes.
Mark Stoneman: Experienced batsman who knows his game and passed 1,000 first-class runs for four successive seasons.
Garry Ballance: 1,019 runs at 67.93 in his first 10 Tests.

Chris Woakes: Quality All-rounder with a batting average higher than his bowling average.

Retaining the Ashes will be tough but England have the quality to win.

Garry Ballance - has done sweet FA since his first 10 tests because good bowlers have found him out.

I agree with your assessment about the rest

We like a bit of pessimism on this thread njosmithers, so you "could" say...

Root: Will almost certainly be batting in the first 10 overs against the new ball. Failed out there last time when that happened.
Anderson: Lost a yard of pace and won't swing the Kookaburra ball.
Cook: Past his best.

Bairstow: Struggled early in his career against the short fast pitched delivery and certain to smell a lot of leather.
Broad: Will get sledged to death by the convicts. Unlikely to reproduce "that" spell.
Moeen: Not bad for a second spinner, but he's no Swanny.
Stoneman: Not proven at Test level. Carberry, Lyth, Robson, Compton, Hales, Jennings, Duckett etc etc.
Ballance: *
Woakes: Solid all rounder, but he's no Derek Pringle.

* There are no words suitable in my vocabulary
