The only issue with the AZ trial is not enough data in over-65s. There are good reasons for that.

- they focused on recruiting younger people first so that they had a good sense of safety

- that meant that there were fewer over-65s in the trial than in other companies' trials at the endpoint.

So much of this is down to protocol design. The good news seems to be that there's a decent transmission reduction from the AZ vaccine (not something that all trials were monitoring).

Sounds like some very good indications about AZ reducing transmission.

ONS data tests prevalence rather than incidence. Apples and oranges compared with ZOE.

It seems a very strange trial protocol design though don't you think. It was known from day 1 that the elderly were most at risk, and therefore who needed the vaccine most, so why would you not include enough of them to prove statistical significance ?

I think its safer to test in younger and healthier people first who if there was a reaction would have most chance of fighting it off

I'd agree with Baz - would be a safety issue.

I haven't been outside on my bike since November because
1. Last time I talked to another cyclist who was cheerfully detailing me all the ways in which lockdown hadn't affected his life (meeting up with mtbers 8+ group at weekend, daughter travelling back and forth from uni etc in another city)
2. The literal interpretation of local area = city means a 7 x 4 mile area to cycle in, bounded by busy A road and very muddy single-track or suburban roads lined with parked cars and pedestrians who have a death wish
3. The persistent heavy rain = very muddy trails
4. Worried about people having a go at me for being out

So I've stuck to my indoor trainer.

I thought the idea of a trial was to prove it worked against the target population ?

Yeah so once they know there is no reaction they start to widen it out more.
