Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Me too, me too. Both when I read it first as a probably-young-teenager, and much more recently.

I have finished it too, but not ready to write about it yet; want to look up all those unusual words first.

I can indeed, Linds! The first one I looked up was exeleutherostomise. There is apparently no record of this word in any work prior to CMOD-E. Likewise helmintoid, sufflamination and brachyureate. The others, however, do have meanings. Very specific meanings, some of them. Incunabula, for example, refers to a book printed (not hand-written) prior to 1501. Nacreous means iridescent, or mother-of-pearl-like. Ungraith is obsolete but seems to have had a whole variety of meanings at different times.

I also checked up on a shrike. I knew it was a bird of some kind, but nothing more about it.

The bird the shrike is also known as the butcher bird, hence Malry’s nickname for his girlfriend.

I am trying to work incunable into my daily conversations. It isn’t easy as it is by its nature dated but I’m persevering :-)

My word of the day was tricuspid which I used unwittingly to describe a tree which had three separate trunks originating from a single root.
