Morning! Awful night's sleep, what with heartburn, an aching knee and OH snoring. But the show must go on - dog walk then another 7 miles to do today. I'm heading inland today so I'm hoping the going will be a bit easier than the last couple of days. |

Morning all ... different day today in my US holiday ... We’re leaving Bodega bay today, for the shortish drive to Sonoma for 2 days of hedonistic binging. Or maybe bingeing – I’m not planning on a 2 day web browser search. First off is dinner with friends, not seen for 3 years and relatively 'local'. This was a tough choice – off to smashburger.com for a true American burger, fries & milkshake? Or somewhere a bit more interesting? This is where the virtual moves into the fantasy … we’re off to The French Laundry. Probably taking a taxi / limo, although $50 seems steep to me. And hoping my alternative holiday clothing meets the dress code. Guess shorts, t-shirt and sandals is out? Although apparently, ties are optional. Like all ‘good’ restaurants, it has 3 of those Michelin starry things, so I’m expecting a lot guide.michelin.com And it’s booked out for ever and more – so no chance of ever really going there in real life. I’ve checked beforehand, the fixed menu is $325. 4 of us. So no problem, as this is all virtual. Except, the first thing I see is the ‘upsell’. And extra $60 if you want the caviar. And an extra $125 if you want the ‘Shaved Périgord Black Winter Truffle’ on the ‘Mac and Cheese’. Stop – I’d remove their stars right there … it’s ‘Macaroni Cheese’ never ever Mac and Cheese. I might have got used to fenders, trunks, elevators, pants etc, but never ever Mac and Cheese. Although I suppose it’s better than Mac ‘n Cheese. That’s what 3 Michelin tyres (or stars) does for you. Anyway, we’re here, it’s virtual fantasy, so we’re all having the upsold extras. Standard meal now at $510 each. No sweat. There is a vegetarian menu if wanted. Also with the shaved Périgord at only $125 extra. I must admit, I’m bracing myself for the next bit … the wine list. Luckily it looks reasonable. The first 2 pages are all about $50 - $100, not too steep, it seems. Then I notice, that’s ‘per glass’. So $50, at least, for the ‘house wine’ ? You may want a brief pause here … the wine list has over 2900 wines on it. Where do they keep them all? There are a few bottles for $150 - $200, but also regular scattering of bottles at $10,000 to $50,000. We’ll play safe, not risking ordering one of those by mistake and go with the suggested ‘paired wines’ at $400 each. We may have had $50 margaritas while we made that decision. So for 4 of us, thankfully tea and coffee at the end is free, but there are over 100 cigars to choose from, if you want ($20 to $100), although none of us do. Don’t even think of a brandy or whisky. Ooops, too late, another $50 - $1000 (each) gone. So – without splurging too much, we’ve spent more on dinner for four than the accommodation costs for the 3 weeks holiday. And it’s still packed and booked solid …. Enjoy … and no, I have no idea what the food was actually like. But there’s plenty of food porn pics on the web if that’s what you want. I’ve also no idea what happens if you suggest, for example, your Calotte (??) de Boeuf was a little overdone/underdone to your taste, or even if we needed the Smashburger on the way home because we were still hungry. It will all have to remain a fantasy. I doubt I will ever get to try it for real. Not so much ‘how the other half’ live, more ‘who on earth spends like that and how is there a never ending queue of people lining up to spend like that’ ?? Makes the $50 taxi fare seem quite reasonable. Will be a different day tomorrow … exploring all the things that Sonoma offers. Mainly wine. |
