In one of my blog comments yesterday, JCB pointed out that Another Website had hidden a specific graph behind its paywall. It was a simple enough graph - just a pace versus time graph for your attempts at a Fetch Mile.
I took great delight in adding it to our pages! The graph itself took about ten minutes, but I decided to rejig the page a bit whilst I was at it.
Here's the old version of the page, for a nearby Fetch Mile:
I didn't like the way that the two leaderboards (one for your attempts, the other for all-comers) would extend indefinitely down the page. So the new one cuts these leaderboards off BUT if you put your mouse on them, you can scroll them, so the info is still there. And below your attempts, the all-important graph of your efforts over time. I've moved a few other elements about too - hopefully it looks a bit sharper now.
Find the Fetch Mile map here:
fetcheveryone.com/mile.php
and if there are none near you, create them! Just go to any training entry, and look for the 'Build A Mile' button in the training entry header.
An hour or so of my time, to help you enjoy more views of your data. For free if that's where you're at, and supported voluntarily by those of you who are willing and able.

I had a lot of nice comments in response to the July Monthly Update. This is the third one, and it feeling like it's working well - so I thought I'd share it here in the hope that a few of you might opt in to receiving them. If so there's a link at the end of the blog to the page where you opt in.
Typically, I open with a bit of a rant about something, and then tell you what's changed on the site during the last month. For newbies, it's a little reminder of the breadth of stuff that happens on the site; and for grizzled warhorses, it's a hopefully helpful reminder of what's been updated, and things you may already have forgotten My hope is that it conveys the character and the ethos of FE, illustrating what's on offer and why we're different. Let me know what you think, if you haven't already.

Monthly Update - July 2023
Respecting your eyeballs since 2004
In July, Elon Musk stopped third party websites embedding Twitter content. We used to feature Twitter feeds on some blogs and user profiles. These have now disappeared. If you want Twitter content, you have to go there to find it.
He's played with other changes too, including restricting access for people who don't pay for a 'blue tick'. The bigger the giant, the more opportunity they have to fine tune their model to entice, persuade and ultimately milk our eyeballs. Of course, it's debatable whether unlimited access to Twitter is good for you. But the underlying principle is clear. Build the audience, then make them pay.
Paywalled tools and content are becoming more common as the giants of the internet stomp around making their mark. We are heading rapidly towards an online class system with big companies at the helm.
In fairness, it's not restricted to the internet. Our local garage couldn't repair our car because the manufacturer has ring-fenced the know-how, so we had to pay through the nose at the official garage. And local running shops are being forced out of business because big manufacturers won't supply to them, in favour of big chains and online sales.
Perhaps you accept and welcome it. To take another example, maybe you lovestrava and everything it gives you. Even if you only use the free version. But what happens if your favourite feature (of any online service) becomes something you have to pay for? And what happens to the smaller independent organisations, when your eyeballs are elsewhere?
I promise you that Fetcheveryone is different. I will never introduce a paywall. You will always have access to the best I can offer. I rely on enough of you making voluntary donations to cover my costs. And those of you that either can't afford to do that this time round, or just choose not to... you get exactly the same.
Of course, this means that one day I might be squished by a giant. But if you are with me, that day is not today.
Rant over, let's look at this month's site updates:

Early start this morning - the dog is being a total dickhead and barking every morning any time between 4am and 6am to be let out; and then won't settle until he's either gained access to a bedroom, or been taken for a walk. This morning it was a 4.15 bark. I have not been back to sleep. I don't drink caffeine any more, so I can't even pep myself up
Luckily, I've been working on some exciting code! I've built a Conquercise Heat Map - nature's caffeine! Here's a screenshot:
It's quite fascinating to see where running routes congregate, and the favoured routes that link them up. It highlights the busiest sections of coastal paths, as well as popular peaks. It shows you those all-important unexplored squares, just in case you've ever wanted to be the first person to explore somewhere. It covers the whole of the world (although I've restricted the level of zoom to stop it making too many nutty requests to the server), so if you're off somewhere on holiday, you can see whether there are popular running locations. And you can click the map too - it'll take you to the page for that zone.
It's still building itself - it has about 30% of the zones still to analyse - so some of the gaps may well disappear, and some of the orange bits may get redder.
You can find it by going to Conquercise and clicking the 'World' tab. Or if that sounds like waaaaay too much effort, here's a link:

Recently I asked our Fetch swimmers to see if they could boost our swim event listings. And they did a grand job. We've gone from 48 listings in 2023 up to 232. Thank you to everyone that did their bit!
I thought it'd be good to make the different types of event show up on the race finder map. I've had a crack at sorting out the colour scheme. Runs are in red, swims blue, rides green, and parkruns are something like apricot. Multisport events are multicoloured - I'll let you figure those out.
Here's a before and after:

On September 5th 2004 I ran my first ever 10k And I count it as the official birthday of Fetcheveryone. The website existed prior to that, but after that race, I uploaded some race pics, and recorded my times - and the whole thing got going.
This means that September 5th 2024 will be our 20th anniversary! It's been some ride.
For our 10th and 15th years, I released some special edition Fetch shirts and vests. I'd like to do something similar for the 20th anniversary, and wondered if there were folks reading this who might be interested in submitting a design for it. I figure perhaps we could do something whereby the designer gets a bit of money from each sale.
I already have one interested party in Sombrero - but I think it'd be fun to get some competing designs (and perhaps we could offer up more than one design, when the time comes).
I first asked this question on the lovely Fetch Emporium thread (check it out - if you sell artsy/craftsy things say hello on there and I can add a link to your shop; or if you are interested in nosing round the things that artsy/craftsy Fetchies produce, there are some links: fetcheveryone.com/forum/fetch-emporium-61328/ )
Shout out if you're up for it!

Do you remember this?
A one paragraph aside at the start of my Big Welsh Swim adventure. One paragraph that skirted over a traumatic day.
The car has made it via our local garage (who couldn't repair it) to the Ford garage. They said it needs a new engine, because it has "low compression" (I think this means that the cylinders are out of shape). They said that'd be £13,000 please.
This is the swishiest car we've ever owned, but I don't think it cost that much in the first place. We haven't finished paying for it either.
I've rung some local garages, and one pointed me at an engineering company in Letchworth that would collect the car, strip the engine, and recondition it for £2950+VAT = £3540. It's still very scary money, particularly on top of that which we've paid out already.
We're a bit stuck really - a toss up I guess between going for the recondition versus cutting our losses and seeing what we can scrape together for a replacement car, and which other plans will have to be shelved to make it happen.
Please forgive me today if I appear a little distracted.

£13,000 is very expensive, but Ford workshops charge a lot, using Ford-only parts which are dear.Flatlander
"Low compression" suggests more that there is too much clearance between the rings on the pistons and the cylinders in which the pistons sit. Either the pistons/rings and/or the cylinders are worn. If that is so, either new pistons/rings are needed or a cylinder re-bore with new pistons/rings is required. It's a big job. The Letchworth engineering company's price looks reasonable.
A completely "new" reconditioned engine is a good option, especially if it comes with a good warranty, but you've still got to pay someone to collect your car, remove the old engine and dispose/recondition it for someone else, fit the new engine, and return the car to you.
25 years ago when leaded petrol was about to be phased out, I converted my car engine to take unleaded petrol, which meant replacing the valve seats with hardened ones. I took out the cylinder head, got Ivor Searle from Soham ivorsearle.co.uk to collect the head and replace the seats, return the head to me, and I refitted it. I can't remember the cost, but it would have been around £100. I doubt that Ivor Searle would collect from your area.
If you felt like removing the engine yourself it would take several days and need several tools, and then you'd have to refit it yourself ! Easier to get someone else to do it for you.8:07pm, 17th Jul 2023 -
Ouch! Been there, done that (Ford Mondeo). The Ford dealership in Newbury (where it died!) made a mess of the job, and we ended up having it rebuilt by a small garage locally 3 months later! We part-exed it as soon as we could, and got a Skoda instead. We've never looked back.3M

Today I sent an fmail out to everyone who has logged at least five miles of swimming so far in 2023.
Our event listings have many thousands of runs listed for 2023, but when I sent the message, only 48 swim events! That's now gone up to 65 events - but I'm sure there are loads more to add.
If you google outdoor swimming events, the results are often individual swims with 'sponsored' links in the search results; or a mish-mash of articles highlighting a bunch of someone's favourite swims; or unsavoury listings companies that claim to be the most comprehensive list on the internet. Even though that's demonstrably untrue.
My hope is that with 316 swimmers on my fmail list, we could build our swim event list just like we did with the run listings many years ago. It would just need each swimmer on the list to find maybe 3-4 events that hadn't been added. Once we hit a critical mass, it becomes a virtuous circle. The better our listings, the more people use them. The more people use them, the more people contribute to them. The more people contribute to them, the better they become.
And once we get a decent-sized list, it gets easier to recreate that in future years by copying old events to their new dates, rather than having to type in the details from scratch.
I'm blogging this as well as fmail, because I wonder whether sometimes people don't notice fmail. Or there might be some of you that don't swim that might have five spare minutes to seek out some listings. And who knows, you might get inspired to join in with the swimming too!
If you can spare some time to help out, here's the page you need to add an event listing:
fetcheveryone.com/race-add.php
And for a bit of a Scooby Snack to get you going, there are new badges for listing 10, 25 and 50(!) swim events. I imagine these will be pretty rare. With your help, this could be a fantastic resource for all of us, and encourage loads more swimmers to the site.

A whispered, half-remembered dream
7:11pm, 9 Jul 2023
Only your eyes are unclosed to see the black and folded town fast, and slow, asleep. And you alone can hear the invisible starfall, the darkest-before-dawn minutely dewgrazed stir of the black, dab-filled sea where the Arethusa, the Curlew and the Skylark, Zanzibar, Rhiannon, the Rover, the Cormorant, and the Star of Wales tilt and ride.
Our journey to North Wales began on Thursday morning at 8am. And ended at 9.30am on a sliproad just outside Wolverhampton, as the engine slowly died. A nightmare ninety minutes waiting for a recovery truck, whilst lorries whizzed past just a few feet away from us; then a further two hours waiting for the AA to find us at Hilton Park Southbound services on the M6; another two hours waiting for the £300 flatbed that would carry us home (sweaty chariot) to Bedfordshire; and then a two hour journey whilst our driver vaped and texted and looked at vans on Facebook Marketplace.
We nearly called it a day there and then. But neither of us wanted to miss out on the event. We'd paid for it, trained for it, paid for the accommodation, and I'd ordered a hoodie that I damn well wanted. Within minutes of sharing our bad news amongst the other swimmers in our group, we had various offers of cars to borrow or lifts to be had. In the end, we borrowed Wine Legs' fancy butt-massaging car, and at 7.45am on Friday, we tried again.
Feeling the fingers of fate, we wondered if our trip was doomed, when first a BMW nearly pulled out in front of us; and then a young deer nearly flung itself onto our bonnet as it skated confused around the road – all within five miles of leaving the house.
An ironic cheer as we made it past our breaking-down point. A new PB for getting as close to Snowdonia as possible. The rest of the journey went about as well as motorway journeys ever can; and we rocked up at our house-share at about lunchtime. The others (Nightjar, Silvershadow, Elsie Too and Wine Legs) were all out sampling the local swimming locations, so me and Special K went for a walk to see Llyn Padarn, and to grab a nice pastie from the Slate Museum. The mountains were absolutely gorgeous, and the lake looked doable, but VERY big. Spoiler alert: it is VERY big, some 3kms from one end to the other.
All eyes were on the forecast. The wind was calm on Friday, but the following day promised gusts in excess of 30mph. I kept telling myself it would all be fine, and we went over as a group to collect our race numbers and my much-anticipated BWS hoodie, which is lovely We all ate together in a busy local restaurant, and we retired to the house to faff over kit bags and early nights.
The morning came, and being no more than a couple of hundred yards from lakeside, I took a quick stroll down to check out the conditions. There was a stiff warm breeze already, and the lake was looking significantly bumpier than when I last saw it.
Bags packed, repacked and finally closed, we headed to the start for the safety briefing. It was hard to hear, but was mostly stuff already covered in the race notes, plus some extra notes about the wind. One of the buoys marking the route had blown away, presumed on its way to the coast.
For added drama, we were taken to the north end of the lake on a tiny steam train. Much staring out of the windows at the white tips on some of the bumpier parts of the water. As we chugged along, Nightjar loaned me some neck lube which, combined with one of Sombrero's hedgehog buffs, did a great job of keeping me largely chafe-free throughout the whole experience.
A short walk followed, and then all too soon the inexorable march across the timing mats and into the lake. A quick pause for a photo of me and K and it was time to get shoulders wet, ice-cream heads dealt with, and on to business.
I have done little or none group swimming, so the first ten minutes was largely about dealing with how close other people come – but as we moved away from the northern shore, this became much less of an issue. Probably because the main issue was getting to grips with being in a washing machine.
It was fifteen whole minutes before I ate my first wave. I literally ate it all. And about twenty minutes in, I got a full sinus rinse out. I have never swum in choppy water before. Imagine you're a road runner, and you're running off road. Except you can't see where the bumps and dips are until after you've fallen victim to them. A hand expecting to glide gracefully into the water is suddenly punching a wave. A head drawn back to sight the next buoy is slapped in the chops by water. And a mouth turned to the side to find that vital air pocket finds nothing but sloshing water. Eventually, I think I got a little bit better at reading the swell, so that when I felt the dip that precedes a wave, I was able to delay my next breath until a better moment.
I had the elapsed time and stroke rate on my fancy goggles, and I broke the time up into twelve minute sections. After each section, I allowed myself to look at my watch to see how much distance it had accumulated. As expected, things were a good bit slower than any flat swim I've done. I went past the half-way station building in about 45 minutes, and started wondering whether I'd get the first length done in under 90 minutes.
I knew that I could stop at 3km if I wanted to – it would still have been a good experience. I saw the big heap of slate on the northern side of the lake that preceded the turnaround point. And from there, I could see something that could well BE the turnaround point. I wasn't that far behind schedule after all, so long as I could do this last bit in just a few minutes...
But swimming plays hell with distance – and what looked like maybe a couple of hundred metres took ages to complete. I wondered at one point if I was stuck in a current, as the view to the side just wasn't changing at all. Eventually though, the turnaround point got closer, and I beached myself on the magic blue carpet, and wobbled up it to the obligatory timing mats.
The official results give me 1:33:08 for this length, although that does include a little bit of a queue getting in, and posing for our photo.
A nice marshal lady pointed me at some jelly sweets, an isotonic drink, and a handful of crisps. I asked how many of the 9k swimmers had come through at this point, and whether I was the last of them – but she assured me that we were still coming through.
I wandered back into the water some 80 seconds later, and did a bit of staring into the distance, looking noble as I peed in my suit. I thought I saw Katie coming into the shore, so I waited to see. It wasn't. I decided to set off again, finding it hard to believe that I would go through everything I'd just experienced, twice over.
The return journey began as a much calmer experience. I came over all Dylan Thomas (hence the quote at the start of this blog), and would like the first half of the leg remembered as a whispered, half-remembered dream. Except for some arseholes in the orange hat wave, who were swimming directly at me
After half way, my thoughts turned to what the time would be when I'd reach the northern shore again. I figured it'd be tight, but I was swimming pretty well. I'd reached the building at half way in a decent time, and it felt as though the lake had flattened out considerably.
On reaching the shoreline, I struggled to find the blue carpet (despite the buoy marking it), so I had to splash my way sideways to it, before making my way up. My main question to the marshal with the clipboard was “Are you gonna cut me off?”. The event had a 3hr cut-off for starting the third lap, and I'd stepped out of the lake about a minute after this point.
He said that yes, he was. I was polite, and said I understood that he was following the rules, but that I would really like to continue. He didn't seem willing to budge, so I felt obliged to accept. Another lady told me I needed to walk across the timing mats to register my time. I walked across. I turned away from everyone, and said 'Fuck!' to the mountains (mountains are hard to offend, and the marshals certainly did not deserve any part of my disappointment).
There were friendly and encouraging faces amongst them. One lovely lady in charge of snacks gave me some jelly sweets, a drink, and chunk of banana “to eat whilst he thinks about it”. And our lovely friend R (who was supposed to have been swimming with us, but could not because of a bike accident) was also there. He said to the chief marshal: “You're being a bit harsh.”
And suddenly it was on again. The chief told me I'd best make sure I made the cutoff. Feeding lady gave me a wink and told me to go smash it. Cross the mats lady gave me a pat on the shoulder. And R gave me a smile. I ran back down the blue carpet and got back in before anyone could change their mind. The whole transaction (albeit with a bit before I'd triggered the mats) took just 78 seconds, but felt like so much longer. The second length came in at an official time of 1:28:09, about five minutes quicker than the first.
With their words and encouragement ringing in my ears, I set off with renewed effort. My cadence was much higher, and I felt that if I could just get a good start, I could somehow survive the rest. I knew that in order to beat the 4hr30 cutoff, I would have to at least maintain my pace, having accrued 3:03:57 by this point.
I knew I wouldn't find many swimmers coming towards me on this length, so it was easier to do less sighting, and keep my head down and swim. About 20 minutes in, I realised there was a kayak paddling alongside me. I wondered whether at some point they would tap me on the head with a paddle and fish me out. Initially I hoped they would back off, as it was a bit disconcerting. But I also realised that it would make sighting even easier, as I just needed to maintain the width between me and it.
In time, a few more joined me, and I twigged that I may well be the last person in the lake, and that the kayakers were accompanying me back. This helped me to keep going, because I felt a bit guilty about keeping them out on the lake any more than they needed to be.
One kayaker disappeared to the shore, and came back with a bag of something that looked like cookies. She waved them over the side at me, in a “you want these, don't you” sort of way – another carrot to keep me going. I said that I was ok, and she told me I was doing well. I felt glad at this point that they were sounding supportive of me, rather than fed up waiting for me.
I had to occasionally ball up my fists on the latter part of my stroke, as my hands were getting very stiff and a bit painful from being in swimming position for so long. I might have shouted a few things under the water to keep me going.
I stuck to my policy of working through 12 minute blocks. The last hour came, and chunk by chunk I got through it. Straining, I saw the heap of slate, and what looked like the finish. I told myself that even if it wasn't the finish, I'd be ok – I could keep going. I was tired, but it felt good. My arms and legs were all still playing ball. Just keep turning it all over. Emotional now.
It was the finish after all. I thought I could hear shouting. I saw the blue carpet! My hand touched it, then my knees, and I got to my feet. I have never finished last in an event before now, but it really is quite something. I got a big cheer. I almost turned round and got back in the water. I said thank you to the lovely kayakers, and clapped back at the crowd.
Making my way up the blue carpet, and across the timing mats... there was Katie with a medal for me, and the best hug ever. Nightjar with a slice of pizza. And the marshal from the north shore, who seemed as delighted as me that I'd made it. And inside the cut off. By three seconds! 4h29m57s, with the final length being my quickest of the three at 1:26:01! I thanked him for trusting me, and hugged Katie about a dozen more times, and probably flashed my undercarriage at everyone as I stumbled into my undercrackers whilst cramming all the spare food into me.
After 4.5 hours of lying down, and once the adrenaline had drained a bit, I did need to stop on a bench, and to lie out flat when I started seeing stars – and Katie did an amazing job of looking after me. The backs of my hands are swollen up today from the effort of all that front crawl. But I feel very lucky to have come away from this experience with a story I will remember for a very long time. As a group we had a mixed bag – from those who swam amazing times, through to those that had difficult experiences, and even poor R who could not swim at all. I hope I can show that same courage and resilience when it is not my day.

This was a gripping read; you had me on the edge of my seat when you were almost pulled out of the race, only to be allowed to carry on 78 seconds later because of the intervention of that marshal - but with the condition that you'd have to give your best performance on the final leg! That is one epic adventure and tale. 🏆🏆🏆JCB4:07pm, 13th Jul 2023
Following yesterday's teaser, I've got a working prototype for you to try out.
fetcheveryone.com/heatmap
Notes:
Currently it shows your own paths only. There is no amalgamated heatmap at present. I need to get my head around how to manage the volume of data. It's certainly possible, but might need a bit of work.
Another user can share their link, which gives you access to their heatmap. Please note that if you share your link, the recipients can see your heatmap for any period of time, and the link does not expire. For example, you are welcome to see my training:
fetcheveryone.com/heatmap/0bb714a9a122db13/51.26094265812867/-0.8510180327911385
As per the usual colour scheme, runs are in red, cycling is green, swimming is blue (I might cheat by making this cyan so it pops against the background), and walking is purple (ditto, might change this to a pink or fuschia).
This is an interactive map - you can drag and zoom. You can also click a route, and it will take you to that training entry.
You can also download an image using the button above the map. The image will show your current view - so if there's an area you want to show off to your friends (without giving them full access to your heatmap), you can frame it in the window and download the image.
It's based on GPS data alone. For me, that's about 13000 of the 15000 miles I've logged. If I use a wide date range to show all my training, it appears to cope with that. My Mac is reasonably powerful (albeit now 11 years old), and it copes ok with that. Your device may have a different experience, particularly if you are viewing on mobile. If that happens, the best advice is to maybe look at one year at a time, rather than overloading the memory on your device.
I am logging your requests, so I can get a rough idea of whether this will fall over in certain conditions - but do let me know if you spot anything weird.
And finally, it is not behind a paywall, and it never will be. If you want to support the site, so I can carry on making cool stuff like this, please consider making a small (or a large!) monthly donation. They all count.

*this is not a sensible suggestion, please do not attempt to do this11:12am, 5th Jul 2023 -
@Slowboy - the variation in GPS data does a good job with this if you zoom in a bit. The lines are currently set to 80% opacity, so there is a multiplicative effect too. It was a trade off between getting that effect and having the one-off lines not showing up.fetcheveryone11:20am, 5th Jul 2023

There's a little popup for each year that your date range covers. It pops up when that year has loaded. I think *everything* should exclude virtual stuff like Zwift... 😒 [mutter mutter nyerrh]ishep 🇪🇺
More constructively, I suspect the efficient/sustainable way to achieve the "everyone" heatmap would be to generate and cache it server-side, then serve it as a raster layer. Periodically, the server would then update it by slightly reducing the opacity of the cached image tiles (so older stuff gradually fades) before overlaying the traces of all activities since the last update. Maybe this approach could even work on an individual user basis, to reduce the burden on client devices.9:28pm, 5th Jul 2023 -

"Heat maps" like in the orange place? Which were withdrawn and put behind a paywall? If so, really great feature for finding paths that aren't paths, for offroad explorers! GHappyG(rrr)9:08am, 5th Jul 2023

Very nice. It could be one person's cycling and running.Bright Strider
It would be interesting to be able to select which activities to add. So: one could see where the club ride went over a year say, or where the hash house harrier trails went over a year, for example.11:19am, 5th Jul 2023
The Scribbler started an excellent thread in 2016 inviting folks to describe a run in *exactly* 100 words. It's great to get you thinking about your word choices, and for editing your own writing to focus on what's important.
I thought I'd give that a mention, and squeeze in a whole month of my own training. Previous training summary blogs by me suggests people prefer short and sweet.
So... running was there when I needed it, and I managed a three hour swim, which sets me up nicely for Saturday's 9k in Llanberis.

I’ve just had my first stab at a time for this
The lovely Fenland Flier sets these up each month in the race calendar - you just add it to your races, and then as far as I know, you just go out and run your best mile at some point during the month.
Rather than start my watch on zero and run one mile, my plan is to throw in a quick mile every so often, and use my best one when we reach the end of the month.
The Fetch Benchmarks (Training > Benchmarks) are great for sniffing out your fastest attempts from a big pile of training. Use the filters at the top to look only at your most recent attempts. Or cry like me and look at all your past glories 🤣
Anyway, put a smile on Fenland Flier’s face, and sign up to his July Virtual Mile:

Sounds fun. Signed up. Noob question - is the pb in the table your fastest mile ever run in July? I’ve definitely run faster miles but may just be a slowcoach historically in the summerCheeky’s Dad9:40am, 2nd Jul 2023

Ok. I’m a bear of very little brain. Just realised it doesn’t automatically scrape your best benchmark mile. You have to enter it as the race result. Doh!Cheeky’s Dad11:25am, 2nd Jul 2023

Say someone runs a mile today and enters that time, then runs a faster mile later on in the month, can they change their time? (Asking for a friend of course! )DoricQuine2:40pm, 2nd Jul 2023
