I was asked this week about the centurion badges. You get these for running 100+ miles each month in a calendar year.
The closest I've ever come to it was registering four centuries in 2018, in the build up to my last marathon. The 12x100 feat takes a lot of determined effort, and the ability to stay injury free.
I thought it'd be fun to build a little table, so you can keep an eye on this year's would-be centurions:
fetcheveryone.com/league-centurions.php
Last year, 209 people hung on to claim the 12x100 badge. The record number was 306 in 2020 - I can't think what it was about that year, but people seem to have had a bit more time on their hands. All told, 1231 Fetchies have managed this feat.
So far this year, there are a whopping 614 people still in contention (technically there are a few more than that, but some folks don't like to share an-y-thi-ng about their training).
You can click the month headings to sort by that month - so you can see the folks that are cutting it a bit fine to stay in the race come the end of the month.
fetcheveryone.com/league-centurions.php?miles=100&year=2023&sortby=apr
131 would-be centurions still have a bit of work to do. Just four running days left in the month, but two of them are the weekend! I guess we'll maybe lose about 30-40 off the list by May 1st.
I think there's every likelihood that spring marathons play a big part in producing that early swell of potential. It'll be interesting to check back at the end of May to see if there's a bigger drop-off. Looking back to last year, there were 67 dropouts from October onwards.
Maybe having a table will encourage more people to cling on - but if this is YOU, I hope you'll favour sense over an adherence to round numbers.
So we're gunning to beat 209 in the 100 league; but when things step up to 200, the air is a bit thinner. Last year, 15 runners managed this. The record is 30 in what I like to call 'the freak year'. So far in 2023, there are a whopping 107 runners still in contention, although we could lose as many as 40 of these if daily averages are anything to go by. But the weekend could save a few more!
And further up the OMFG scale is the 300+ badge. This one's so rare that only 11 Fetchies have conquered this. The badge itself features triple-centurion, Graham Gooch*. [Side fact: although I remember Gooch batting for ever in that match against India in 1990, another highlight was seeing Kapil Dev club four sixes in four balls to save the follow-on.]
The most recent 300+ performance was by JoeBaker in 2021, and the record year was... for a change, 2017 when three Fetchies got over the line. This year, there are a magnificent seven still in contention, although none have yet ticked the box for April. But if you're the sort of person who runs 300 miles most months, I'm not about to doubt what you're capable of in the next four days. Just please be careful.
Will we ever see our 400+ white whale? I looked back, and found one! I don't think he's been around for a few years (probably still getting his breath back), but gazz104 managed the feat in 2019. In fact, if it wasn't for a 473 in November, he would have walked away with the mythical (and thus far non-existent) 500+ badge. Wow!
Stay safe out there people.

Yesterday morning I set out for a walk. I'd damaged both my nipples extensively in Sunday morning's drizzle, so I thought I'd do something else instead of running, to give them chance to grow back .
The dog is always up for stuff like this, so he came too.
Not too far from home, the bluebells in Hanger Wood have put on an astounding show. It's hard to capture just how everywhere they are. And blue. And belly.
Further along the ridge, I found a key hanging in a tree:
We pressed on, and found ourselves in a massive field full of sheep. Initially I thought the main issue would be Stephen pulling on the lead to chase them - but eventually he got the message that he wasn't gonna get to play. And besides, the floor was covered with a load of tasty treats that the sheep had made 🤢 I tried my best to stop him, but short of muzzling or strangling him it would have been virtually impossible.
Most of the sheep ran away, or peed themselves and then ran away. But some were curious enough to stand and watched as we walked the fence line:
I have some questions:
1) why do some sheep have very neat haircuts, whilst others look as though they've asked for a Lionel Blaircut? Is it just a case of 'that'll do'?
2) one of the sheep had a bell round its neck. My best guess is that it was to help short-sighted lambs find it. Or maybe it was the leader. Or perhaps it had a nasty habit of sneaking up on the farmer and butting him or her. Any suggestions as to the real reason?
Anyway, there was also plenty of this:
Further on I had to walk through a farmyard. There were about eleventy-million dogs, all barking their socks off at us. There was not a soul to be seen, and the farm house and buildings very much had a gone-to-seed look about them. I didn't like to take any pictures of the farm itself, but here's an outbuilding:
As the walk went on, Stephen found more opportunities to get muddy, including gallumphing through some sticky puddles in the lovely Kempston Wood. Luckily there was also a nice stream with a fallen log alongside it, where Stephen could drink and paddle to get rid of the mud, and I had a stolen minute sitting on the log (recent blogs about toilets make me fnar about this sentence). On another sunny day, I'd like to head back there with a book and a sandwich.
Here's the route, if you're local enough to try any of it:
fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1849558
Anyway, Stephen was knackered when we got home (he wasn't the only one), so it was quite a surprise to be woken by him at a quarter to midnight. I spent a delightful 90 minutes getting in and out of bed to let him in and out from the garden, whilst he parked the 'sheep treats' all over the garden. Not one to let anyone miss out, he left a few indoors for Katie to find this morning. If ONLY he could master the principle of causation, our walks would be so much more pleasant.
I mentioned a feature! My walk was largely made up on the fly as I went along. But it occurred to me that if I'd planned a route on FE, it'd be nice to be able to see where I was on the route. Handy for navigating - that sort of thing. So when you view your routes on mobile (NB I've disabled the feature on desktops for obvious reasons), you should see a new button in the top right corner of the map titled 'Find Me'. And this should pan and zoom the map to show your location - as accurately as your phone can manage. If you leave it as is, the location will update every ten seconds, so you can make sure you stay on track. I've discovered on a little test walk this morning that sometimes it falls off, and you need to reenable it. But hopefully it's something that you'll find handy.
The test walk was brief - Stephen still processing the last knockings of his over-indulgence. Right now he's hiding behind the curtains, looking a bit... sheepish?

The bell is a secret sheep device . It’s so that undercover sheep can be pulled out if it’s mission rapidly if the sheep troopers get messages from the cows if /when they get suspicious esp when ‘Stephens ‘ eat the cameras hidden in their poo.runnerbean1:09pm, 25th Apr 2023

I think it is possible the sheep with the bell is a naughty one. Either a mistress of escapology or a charger. Some sheep shed naturally but most have to be sheered which might account for the differences in sheep tidiness?RooA1:45pm, 25th Apr 2023

You may want to invest in these, as seen on Dragons Den dandipatch.comum
Or a cheaper version amazon.co.uk
Sheep shearing etiquette and buzz cut or scissors or styled? I suspect it depends on a number of factors
- the skill of the shearer (or Baaa-ber as some may like to be known)
- the wriggliness of the sheep
- if they are being shorn and the fleece is to be sold or if the fleece is just being shredded/binned/given away on fb.1:47pm, 25th Apr 2023 -
Ah yes, my pup likes sheep treats too. The fresh ones are gobbled up and the dried out frisbie ones are carried around a bit until she she finds a fresher one to consume. The greener and the stickier the better!cackleberry

Can you, or does it already, link to a plain map? No need to open a route? And would be fantastic if it could also show rundles, points, conquersize grids?

I can probably do it as an overlay on the route mapper. Or if you don't want the route getting in the way, you could open up one that is not in your current area. I might also add it to the Conquercise, WSW, Rundle, Fetchpoint grids too.fetcheveryone5:06pm, 25th Apr 2023

It’s a bit early for sheep to be shorn, even darn sarf I’d imagine. As the weather warms up the fleece “lifts” ie starts to break off short. It’s this line the shearers follow (some more accurately and carefully than others) Some sheep seem to hold onto their fleeces almost completely while others lose great chunks on their own or pull bits off on fences. Once shorn the fleeces are sadly worth almost nothing these days so there’s no incentive for farmers to get them shorn before this happensCheeky’s Dad12:09am, 26th Apr 2023

It’s also my experience that sheep poo is the ambrosia of the gods for dogs, even sheepdogs who are daily up to their knees in the stuff. Each to their own, I supposeCheeky’s Dad12:12am, 26th Apr 2023

Feature Request #1588 asked for our maps to have an option to show the locations of public toilets (IP addresses?).
I thought about giving you all the option to add your toilet locations. Then I remembered some of the stories I've read over the years of the escapades of runners, and thought better of it.
Then I wondered if the data was already floating around on the internet. Eventually I flushed it out. I found a website called the Great British Public Toilet Map: toiletmap.org.uk I got in touch with them to ask if I could get my hands on their enormous logs - and they said yes!
Our route planner now has a layer called 'Toilets'. So when you are planning your next adventure, you've got something to go on.

Fun fact: did you know that diarrhoea is hereditary? It runs in your jeans.

Feature Request #120. I've added a simple tool here:
fetcheveryone.com/bloodpressure.php
for tracking your blood pressure readings. You can also find this by going to the training home page, and scrolling down a bit until you see the graphic of the bp cuff. Longer term I'd like to bring together all the monitoring stuff (e.g. weight tracking) into one section of the site, but for now this will let you capture your readings and notes, and will draw a simple graph.
I found out quite by accident this time last year that I had high blood pressure. K was doing some readings in preparation for HRT, and I tried the machine out. Luckily, thanks to a daily dose of 5mg of ramipril, reducing salt and caffeine, and trying to avoid stress, my readings are good. I had no clue prior to this. If you've never checked your BP before, it's so easy to do, and might just save your life.

Totally agree, had a free health check at work about 6 years ago which revealed high BP. Until then I just assumed that running had iron proofed me against high BP. (I find it easy to avoid stress now, I retired)kev-eats-owt8:03pm, 19th Apr 2023

Useful thanks! I wonder how many other people unknowingly have high-ish BP which they never know about because fate means they've not tried playing with a BP monitor or getting accidentally tested because they went in for something else.larkim9:32pm, 19th Apr 2023

Got the machine cos my wife's was high. Mine was normal. Was fun tracking it. Guess who doesn't record hers?! Glad you've got yours in hand. GMerry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)10:26pm, 19th Apr 2023

My GP suggested that everyone over the age of 50 should keep a check on their BP, so with a family history of high blood pressure I invested in my own machine. Great to be able to record it on here (tomorrow's job!).stilldreamingofawhitechristmas10:38pm, 19th Apr 2023

Nice addition. I track mine using an app called "BP Journal". They have a trend line (like your new tool) but also one which groups according to NICE classification. Here's both for comparison:Sigh

I used to have mine checked once a year at the doctors with my meds review. This year though we don't have any nurses to do the reviews so I had to fill in an online questionnaire instead. I asked the receptionist about the blood pressure, but they don't have any nurses at the practice so can't check it now...Pegg8:00am, 20th Apr 2023

Sharing these, as they seem to be the most mentioned in messages I've received:
1) underneath the bit where you type your messages, there's a little tickbox. You can untick that if you don't want the Enter key to send your messages. As of today, the site will remember your tickbox preference when you next come back to fmail.
2) Paragraphs! Until today, you needed to hit Enter twice to make paragraphs - otherwise all your text was running together in one big message. That should be sorted now.
3) When you view your message stream with another Fetchie, it marks them all as read. This is great in most cases, but sometimes you need to mark it unread if you need to come back later with a response. Now there's a 'Mark Unread' button on each of your correspondent's messages. If you click one of these, the message and all subsequent messages in the stream are marked as unread.
Little teething problems going away
Your fmail is here: fetcheveryone.com/fmail (or in the topmost nav).
Toodles.

For a portion of last week, Katie and I stayed in an Airbnb in Oldland Common - which is half way between Bath and Bristol. It's a little end-of-terrace cottage with very low ceilings and even lower doorframes. In the kitchen I could feel the ceiling tickling the hairs on the top of my head as I walked around. In the first 24 hours, I twatted my noggin so many times when walking from room to room that I made my head sore. Luckily, I did it an even number of times, otherwise I wouldn't be able to remember any of this.
It also had a very minimalist deathtrap staircase made out of triangle shaped bits of wood.
It's not too bad going up, but it's literally a leap of faith coming back down. A combination of climbing frame and Apollo 11 (but with gravity). There's no rail for the first step down, so you just had to sort of throw yourself into it, and then start grabbing at stuff. Here's the view from above. That bannister you see is at ankle level!
Stephen loves going upstairs to sneak onto beds and other soft furnishings. At home we shut all the bedroom doors, and don't mind him snoozing on the landing, so long as he behaves himself. Here there was no landing, and he was too afraid to walk back down the stairs. I had to carry him down half a dozen times, with his claws grasping at every available surface in an attempt to prolong his visit. By the last evening we eventually assembled a barricade of chairs to thwart his efforts. But then he also does cute stuff like this (can you spot him?):
The house was full of weird ornaments and pictures - but I won't share those here as I've other stuff to show and tell. But you can go find those on the newly-created Hotel Art Appreciation Society thread: fetcheveryone.com/forum/hotel-art-appreciation-society-62634/
The best bit about the cottage is its location - within spitting distance of the Bristol and Bath Cycle Path. It was set up in the seventies on a decommissioned railway line, and is 13 miles of absolutely beautiful flat tarmac. My favourite running surface!
On Thursday I headed in a Bathwardly direction. Katie had been on it earlier in the morning, and told me how busy it was with cyclists, and how they mostly seemed to be heading towards Bristol. So I made a little game for myself as I ran, keeping track of which city would win.
There's still a bit of railway track on the route - and some steam trains too! After about a mile, I arrived at Bitton, which houses a very exciting preservation area for trains. I'm no train enthusiast, but I go weak at the knees for rusty machinery and dilapidated stuff from past design eras. Here's a few pics:
and some absolutely beautiful cranes slowly merging with nature:
I ran for about 2.5 miles until the railway track ended (I guess they shunt the carriages up and down this bit for tourism), and then turned tail. Bristol-bound cyclists had a big lead at this point. I figured that the Bath-bound were at a disadvantage if I was moving towards Bath at 9 mins/mile. And so it was, Bath made a steady comeback, and I gave every cyclist a cheerier smile as the score got closer. Right at the point where I thought Bath might sneak the win, a trio of Bristol bikes sailed past me to take the game away for a 20-17 Bristol win.
On Friday I headed out again in the drizzle, Brizzle-bound this time. The route was a bit more built-up, and a little more undulating. I didn't find much in the way of rusty trains but I found this awesome metal sculpture:
and a drinking giant (which I think is a water fountain - there's a button in his tricep):
Bath had taken a solid lead in the cycling, but the same thing happened after I turned at 2.5 miles. And a final pair of cyclists broke Bath's hearts once again. I ran the Bath direction once more on Saturday, this time running six miles in total, with 4 in the middle at effort pace for the First Time In Ages. It would have been rude not to, it's such a lovely surface. And the weekend bikers gave Bath a resounding victory - 97-35! The sort of trouncing that they'll keep talking about forever. Or at least until next time. It's awesome to see the use that this path gets - I do hope there are others around the country that do so well.
On Saturday afternoon we jumped in the car and drove a few miles downstream towards Bath, to walk a little bit of the next section. We took a detour off the path for a bit of variation, and got very muddy (I even got a muddy arse and a forearm full of nettles, because I fell over in one of the stickier bits). And our 5kg hero, who has walked up Mam Tor and run multiple parkruns looked on from the safety of her rucksack:

I've put the new fmail system fully into place now. You can find it using the 'Fmail' link at the top of the page - it takes you here:
fetcheveryone.com/fmail
Feel free to send me a message to test it out, or to message your friends. It's all tied in to the system now, so their 'Fmail' button in the header will light up when they have messages.
NB you can still access your old fmails - there's a link on the new Fmail page. But if there's anything important in there, please make a note of it. I will keep the old system live for a couple of months, or until it's obviously not being used.
Thanks

Onset of Summer Watch. Have you got Onset of Summer? +fmail!
4:11pm, 3 Apr 2023
On Saturday I did my first open water swim of the season.
I was last in a lake in the first week of November, although I swam in skins* at Woburn Lido through to November 25th. So I'd acclimated my way down to 11 degrees in a wetsuit, and 12 degrees in skins. But that readiness to expose onesself to cold water wears away pretty quickly, and four months of cosy indoor pools has not helped.
[*this means I just wore swimming trunks with no wetsuit. It doesn't mean I wore any skin other than my own.]
But my brain was telling me from previous experiences that I could do it. I had a new XXL neoprene hat and neoprene socks which I'd got for my birthday in December, and these gave me confidence that I'd be as warm as I feasibly could be.
The first thing I spotted as I stepped into the lake was a small dead fish, about two inches long I decided not to treat it as an omen, and pushed on. The neoprene socks were great at protecting my feet from the 'sharp stone dance'!
There's a lot of trying to breathe calmly as you wade in, and the water quickly draws away the warmth from the outer layers of your skin. Shoulders are a troublesome checkpoint, but after that, it doesn't feel too bad to dunk one's head into the water. When we did scuba diving in Lanzarote, the instructors referred to it as "saying hello to the ocean".
After that, it's about steeling yourself ready to start front crawl, because it comes with the knowledge that the next five minutes will be about hands, face and brain feeling cold. And it compromises your swimming a bit, because it's hard to keep your head as submerged as it would be in the pool. And (look away now if you don't like ick), the cold water seems to trigger a lot of phlegm which needs to be dealt with!
But anyway I got through that awkward part, and managed to get round two laps of the lake. I got out feeling like I could have done more - but (a) I would not have completed a third lap within the allotted session, and (b) I wanted to be sure that my body would react well after 40 minutes in the cold water (which my watch suggested was around 12 degrees).
There's always some legendary soul who has brought home-made cake, and Saturday was no exception. And what's more, there are new people at the lakeside cafe, and they've upped the stakes considerably with the introduction of Cornish pasties and hot chocolates. I couldn't refuse!
The new hat made the circumference of my head bigger than its usual very big - so as a result my goggles were super tight. They always give me bags under my eyes, but after this swim, the bags had bags of their own. Check out my new Charlie McLeod changing robe (also a birthday gift, used for the first time proper!)
So that's ripped the plaster off, and I can start working on building up my distance in prep for the Big Welsh Swim. Regular dips will do for April, but in May and June I'll have to start thinking about multi-hour training swims. Thank goodness I don't have to do any more of those in a 25m swimming pool!
--
Today, amongst other things, I've been working out some niggles with our new fmail system. I'm online until about 5.30 if you'd like to try it out. It isn't hooked up to the notification system yet, so you have to be *on* the fmail page to see when new messages come in. At some point in the next day or so, I'll slide it into place as our new Fmail (but you'll still get access to all your old mail). Just in case you didn’t realise, yesterday’s message about ‘Fetch Premium’ was an April Fool. The site will be entirely free for everyone who needs it - but that’s all thanks to the people who make voluntary donations. If you don’t currently donate, here’s some info: fetcheveryone.com/invite.php
Thanks for all the fun comments, and sorry to anyone who was genuinely worried. I shan’t name names 😎

not bragging or anything... 😀
I'll stay in track for the centurion but will drop off the 200 wagon. I had to make decision if I focus on getting a marathon PB or keeping up the 200 streak - the marathon won. I needed a taper and a recovery period so that's that. Maybe next year on a higher base mileage?
I actually deliberately broke my 36x100 month streak last June because I was getting a bit anal about it!
