The lovely um and Reiver have organised a special Christmas treasure hunt! There's a clue every day for stuff to photograph, and you can join in at any point. Here's the thread where you can find out more:

I hope you're all having a nice Christmas. Ours is already a lot better than last year, as neither me nor Katie have COVID.

Thanks for all your comments on yesterday's blog. It feels good to bring the analytics in-house. It means I know *exactly* how it works, and don't have to wonder exactly how far it's nose has poked into our business.
I was reading through the blogs on December 14th - the ones where I asked you for your annual reviews. One suggestion for an improvement to FE came from Funky Chicken - and it chimed with stuff that had been bubbling away somewhere in a murkier corner of my noggin.
The home page. Either you know what you want when you get there, or the options are potentially overwhelming. It's a bit like the 'jam study' - https://faculty.washington.edu/jdb/345/345%20Articles/Iyengar%20%26%20Lepper%20(2000).pdf - which hypothesised that too many choices can be debilitating.
By reducing the clutter, and focusing on what's best to convey to new users, it should become easier for them to see a way forward.
First up, and in line with FC's suggestion, I've ditched the ads on the home page. It is the most popular landing spot for people arriving at the site, so let's make the most of it. Yes, it will mean a bit of lost ad revenue... but if I consider that lost revenue as 'money I'm spending on advertising Fetcheveryone', then it feels like a good compromise. Spending money you don't earn on something you don't have to pay for seems like a good magic trick.
This gives our home page messages more room to take centre stage. The festive calendar banner is prominent at the moment, but once we get to December 25th, that'll disappear. And if you're not signed in, that means that the first thing you'll see when you come to the home page is me gurning at you, next to a big green 'Get Started' button.
Following the 'gurnbox', there are four panels: the latest forum activity; an invitation to connect your Garmin, Coros, Suunto etc (which turns into a list of your recent training once you start logging); a search box for events; and a list of the day's most popular blogs. I personally think that these are handy, as they show that the community is active, and give you four of the key things that the site offers.
And then below that, there were 12 (twelve!) gaudy blocks offering tempting insights into what a person can do on the site. When I started cramming these in, I really wanted to show all and sundry what FE could offer.
But what do the analytics show?
With a bit of shovelling, I found all the instances where people landed at the home page. Where would they go from there? I gathered a sample of 1625 landings on the pre-changes home page, and looked at what happened.
290 people (17.8%) buggered off straight away. It could be the invasive ads, or the dozen gaudy invitations, or the fact that I don't use a picture of a group of trendy aspirational people inviting sign up. We'll never know, but perhaps some timely changes will reduce that loss rate in that golden period post-Christmas, when everyone has the best intentions to shape up.
There were 64 pages that people went to after landing at the home page. And here perhaps is where my analysis needs more work - because I cannot as yet separate the 'logged in' from the 'anonymous'. The picture is clouded by notification links e.g. the 'Christmas Fess' page featured quite highly on the 15th, despite no permanent link on the home page.
Viewing forum threads was the most popular, with 281 people travelling to a thread. And the festive calendar was a big draw, with 175 people clicking it. Weirdly, 157 people just refreshed the page! I suppose that if you're watching thread titles, or waiting for a notification, it might be a thing you'd do. Next came viewing a piece of training (103), and reading a blog (95), then signing in (80), visiting the main forum page (78), visiting the training log (56), and visiting the blogs main page (43).
Those are the top ten outcomes, and account for nearly 84% of what happens when people visit the home page. The dozen gaudy boxes barely get a look in. So the second change is to ditch the gaudy boxes.
The home page now looks much more focused, and once the festive calendar goes, it'll be even more so. It'll be fascinating to see what the analytics show over the next few weeks. If it only reduces the number of people who walk away without exploring, it'll be worth it.

I think getting rid of the ads on the home page is a great idea. On the rare occasions I visit from another device and have to log in I see the ads and just know if I was a new sign up I’d immediately change my mind! I have an aversion to ads though so might not be typical.jennywren10:07am, 19th Dec 2023

The one thing it dosn't do is say in big letters 'Welcome' or other greeting. Other than the small text at the top. And maybe consider, a bigger more prominent "The free website for runners, cyclists, swimmers, walkers and everyone else."um
But I don't really use it, my normal entry to fetch is either 'already logged in so no need' or straight to the forum page.10:11am, 19th Dec 2023 -

I do wonder if you could go further though for non-signed in users. A lot of pages only make sense for members, so perhaps those pages should work better as a way of selling the site for them? They could just be browsing and seeing if FE is for them? (I realise though that having lots of ad-free pages until they sign up and then whacking them with adverts is a bit dodgy too!)11:40am, 19th Dec 2023 -
Good improvement to the home page. When I first joined (Dec 2016), it was really cluttered. I've always liked the simpler approach. If I were a newbie, then the first place I'd go would be to my training; then events. Forums and blogs are (I imagine) for more established fetchies who are already comfortable with their way around the site. So, maybe have a link to the beginner's guide somewhere too: for a newbie, even the 'tips' are somewhat overwhelming.Sigh11:59am, 19th Dec 2023

For many years now, I've had Google Analytics running on the site. It tracks site usage, and in theory tells me a bunch of useful stuff that helps me manage the site.
But back about six months ago, they announced that they were introducing a new, more powerful version. And for my simple needs, it's become almost unusably complex. It made me resent the unnecessary over-complication, plus I could happily live without having a third-party organism attached to the hull of the site, tugging at the wires.
Here are some examples of how I use analytics:
1) to tell me the number of pages being viewed per month, so I can see if the site is doing well.
2) to tell me which individual pages are getting lots of traffic, so I know which bits are a hit with you lot, and which bits have become backwaters.
3) to look at 'Bounce Rate'. A 'bounce' is when someone arrives on any page of the site, and then leaves again immediately. A high value means that either (a) it wasn't what they were looking for, or (b) the page was a horrible mess, or (c) the page was fine, but there was no encouragement to stick around and see what else is on offer. It helps me work out which pages need some attention.
4) Screen widths. If you use the site on a variety of screens, you'll see that it looks a bit different depending on the width of your screen. Knowing which screen sizes are popular helps me make sure that pages look decent on the majority of popular screens.
5) Looking at how new users use the site, so I can minimise the chances that they'll be put off by something mystifying or too complex.
So as a birthday coding treat, I made my own little analytics tool. It's telling me just about everything I need to know, and I finally took the plunge and removed the Google Analytics code snippet from our pages today. In theory, it makes the site just a tiny bit faster, and just that little bit LESS overlooked by a global behemoth. They'll probably penalise me by dropping me down various search results - but so long as YOU'RE still here, what does it matter?

If Google do that doesn't that mean the site will be less likely to be found by accident? An ongoing conversation with my uni club during the last two years has been they almost have no public online space. Seven years ago today, I got a very shocking phone call. You can read all about that here:
fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2018/12/387839
But the upshot was that I put my faith in the Fetch community, and you absolutely came through for me. My job is to give you the tools you need to enjoy and improve your training; to give you confidence as individuals to find the intersections of a huge Venn diagram where you can share parts of your lives with others; and to be on hand with a mop and a lemon-scented towelette on the rare occasions where it is needed.
And because there's just me behind the scenes, I try to do all this by enabling the community, rather than trying to control it. It is the community that adds the race listings, entertains each other, polices the spam, looks after each other, tests the bugs, innovates with feature requests, and ultimately lets me know how things are going. There is no paymaster controlling the future of the site - it's in your hands.
It's been a challenging year financially for a lot of people. I've had various people drop me a line over the year, to say that they have to stop their contributions - and just about every one of those people have said "I hope to put it back in place soon". And that's where we differ from a paywalled experience. I want those people to still have access to everything.
Despite the cost of living challenges, amazingly donations are up just a little bit (about 2%) on last year. Some of this is existing donators chucking an extra quid per month in the meter. It's another rule of mine that I will never ask for that, but it's lovely when I spot it now and then. And some comes from new people chipping in, often with a message along the lines of "sorry it's not much". I always reply to these people to thank them, and to point out that if absolutely everyone did the same as them, I'd be sitting on a big pile of cash. It's all appreciated, thank you.
On the other hand, the money from ads and affiliate links (e.g. the Amazon one) continue to fall, year after year. In the case of ads, when the site became independent again they'd bring in about £1000 per month, which was a key part of making ends meet back then. Nowadays, and despite the site being as busy as always, I'm lucky if they bring in £150 per month. And whereas Amazon could be relied on for a couple of hundred quid per month in links, now it's almost pointless. You folks bought about £5K of Amazon products via the link in the last year, and it nets me about £10 a month.
Off the field, it's been a difficult year too. It started with Covid for both of us on Christmas Day 2022. Katie's had multiple bereavements to deal with - one sudden, one drawn out; and the loss of her dog. And then there was the car that decided to chew up its own engine and spit us out somewhere on a dual carriageway near Wolverhampton. We'd just about got over that, and then the flood came in October (finally killing off the car in the process). But it's not been all bad - we both achieved lovely things with our swimming, and I've had a very consistent year of running to set me up well for big adventures in 2024.
So when Katie suggested the scene for this year's Star Wars picture, it felt like an absolutely perfect match. Knee deep in murky water, surrounded by crap, and trying to stay on top of things whilst the walls are closing in. But we'll get '3PO to shut down the garbage masher, and we'll change our outfits and blow the crap out of that Death Star. I find your abundance of faith... wonderful.
Btw, my friend pointed out that it looks like Katie is trying to ram that pole up my backside, and now I can't unsee it

Once you've figured out who you are, please add 'SOLVED' to your blog title, to save people having to dip into your blog to check. Ta
Also... once you've received an answer to your question, go to the edit screen for your blog, and submit an edit (no need to change anything, but some people are storing their questions in the blog). What this does is remove the green tick from anyone who has viewed your blog previously, showing that you are 'active'.
