Benchmarks - a *tiny* little improvement

1:49pm, 28 Jun 2021
When looking at your benchmarks (Train > Benchmarks), you could either specify "Forever" as the time period, or you could choose a number of months.

I realised that it would be nice to have an "All of [current year]" option, so you could keep an eye on your season's bests too. Especially during a time when you might struggle to get to events for one reason or another.

Anyway. There's an extra option in the dropdown on your benchmarks page, which lets you do just that. And if you look at the URL, you can see how you can actually specify any start date.

fetcheveryone.com/benchmark.php?startdate=2021-01-01

It was a less-than-ten-minutes sort of change, and nothing ground-breaking - but hopefully useful.

Right. Have your selves a merry little June 28th, if you'd be so kind.

Race Leaderboards - some small improvements

4:57pm, 24 Jun 2021
If a race has been held more than once, a link appears on the listing so that you can see the 'All Time Leaderboard'. I've moved that into the header of the race listing now, to make it a tiny bit more prominent.

I've made some little adjustments to the leaderboard page today, to correct some bits that were looking a bit crappy. Here's what the old page looked like for Bedford parkrun (yeah, I know it's not technically a race, but try doing timekeeping one week and seeing how polite people are as they reach the finish line ;-) ).

Because there are multiple events during any given year, it was totally breaking that right-hand column. And because any given parkrun on any given weekend has not much more than a handful of Fetchies, it was gappier than a pirate's smile. So I wanted to fix that. Plus I reckoned I could do a better job indicating which performances were PB's, SB's, and to make the gender lists within the main list a bit easier to see. And unless you spot the little underline on 'Time' and 'WAVA', it's not obvious that the table can be sorted by either. If you do change it to WAVA, then it'd be nice if the little table on the right would show the best WAVA attempts too, rather than just the fastest times.

So here's the new version:

I'm not expecting anyone to gush about how amazing it is, but I've tried to work out some solutions to the problems I found, so I just wanted to share.

The mobile version is slightly different too:

Most notably, the WAVA column is now visible, and because the link to sort by WAVA has been moved to the red box at the top, it makes that option available to mobile users too.

In doing all this, it occurred to me that it'd be cool to show a WAVA distribution for the race. It's down below the list on the mobile version just now, but top-right on desktop. With enough data, it could even be possible to compare two events, and see whether one tended to produce higher WAVA scores than the other. I've certainly seen some interesting variations in the shape of that curve for the different events that I've tested on. Here's a quick example - Abingdon Marathon vs London:

My first thoughts are that this fits with my feeling about the two events - London being the aspirational event for all-comers, where crowds are your biggest impediment to getting a good time; Abingdon showing up as a place for those hard efforts where you can be alone with the pain.

Race Finder - Update

2:58pm, 23 Jun 2021
This week, I 'ave been mostly updating the Race Finder.

To give you a chance to compare the two, you can find the new one here:

fetcheveryone.com/races-map.php

and the old one here:

fetcheveryone.com/old-races-map.php

If you CBA with going for a look, I've even done you some screenshots. Here's the old version:

and here's the new version:

There are quite a few changes, hopefully nothing that doesn't make good sense. Let me run past them with you:

1) I've dropped the text from the start of the page. Better I think to let you get straight to what you want. Other sites that are essentially search engines (AirBNB, Amazon, RightMove) don't waste time telling you how to get stuck in - they just make it obvious what you have to do.

2) The main search parameters now live across the top, rather than down the side. I have hidden some of them behind the 'More Filters' button. Server logs suggest that they are used fairly infrequently compared to the main params.

2b) I've added a '+-1000 mile' option now, for those of you who like to search faraway places for potential events to base a trip around. [part of FR#621]

2c) I've added a '90 days away' and '180 days away' options, as handy options for when you're planning a marathon from scratch. [FR#555] And for those that voted for it, an 'All of 2021' option. [part of FR#541]

3) You'll notice three tabs - for events, parkruns and 'virtual events'. The first of these lists all the 'normal' running events, and is the default view. I've also made each tab show the number of matching things within. If your search returns 98347899873567 results, the tab will tell you, but there's also a polite yellow box that tells you you'll only get the first 100 in each category.

3b) Although the old version has a list of parkruns (tucked down on the right in the yellow box), it looks like a real afterthought on that page. It was! And what's the deal with those grey-brown boxes round each one? Are they clickable? (Yes) Can I see them on the map? (No). They deserve better, so they have their own tab now.

3c) A while back I made it possible to mark an event as virtual when adding it to the database - so now it's time to make sure they are in the right place. And whilst the lack of a pin on the map is a potential problem, it would still be nice to be able to filter the options by distance, wouldn't it. [FR#1145] And when you go look at that tab, there's no map, but I've added a price column - so you can see quickly which events are trying to take advantage of your enthusiasm :-)

4) The map itself should render as a square. I've added the parkrun dots to it too (see the purple 'p' symbols - I used lowercase, I promise), which has really livened it up.

4b) If you drag the map around, a green 'Search here' button appears in its top-right corner. If you click that, it will reload the page, but using the new centre of the map as the epicentre for your search. Note that your chosen radius will still apply - so if the visible map shows a wider area than your search radius covers, you may get some blank areas outside the circle. [part of FR#621]

5) To the right, you'll see the matching listings. If you put your mouse over one of these, it should highlight the location of that event on the map, by hiding all the others. Handy for a quick look at where something is.

5b) A little usability thing - if the list of results is taller than the map, a little 'Scroll For More' button appears in the bottom right of the listings to make it obvious that you can pull the list up for more.

6) Mobile stuff. The following screenshots show you the before and after, viewed on Chrome's simulation of an iPhone5 (320 pixel width):

On the left, what I am trying to show is just how much scrolling you have to do before you have to get to anything that hints at giving you what you need. By stripping the intro text and hiding less-used filters, you get to see the map straight away, which means you get a really good idea of what this page is going to give you without having to touch a thing.

--

I'm reading a great book at the moment - it's called 'Don't Make Me Think', by Steve Krug. The premise is that the most important usability rule is to let the user know what's going on without forcing them to have to spend time working it out. It's full of great usability tidbits and examples that make you look at your own pages with a fresh eye. amzn.to

Up there ^

There's a little dropdown box that will let you quickly get to all author's previous blogs.

Yes, if you're on a desktop, there's a thing over on the right >>>> titled 'Blog Archive' that does the same sort of thing. I've added an 'Expand All' button to that list too, so you don't have to spend ages opening and closing the different leaves of the tree.

So why the duplicate functionality? Well, if you're viewing on a mobile, the blog archive thingy ends up being underneath all the blogs. Which means that plenty of less-persistent scrollers may not even have been aware that it existed.

S'only a little change, but I quite like it :-)

Routes - more updates

4:46pm, 16 Jun 2021
Back last week (see June 10th: Some little updates to your routes list), I described some amendments I'd made to the 'Your Routes' page, to make it easier for you to manage and categorise your list.

I've followed this up with some small changes to the 'View Route' page. Mostly it's usability tweaks, but I've also done away with the old 'Edit Route' button that used to hang off it. That took you to a fairly old page with a very basic Google Maps-based route editor. It had none of the features of 'Add Route' page. I *could* have updated 'Edit Route' to make it very similar to 'Add Route'... But it felt like a massive gumption trap to build two similar versions of something.

Instead, if you click the new 'Send to Editor' button, it takes you to the 'Add Route' page, and pumps that route in as though you'd just created it. Saving it will create a new route (so you might have to delete the old one, if it's of no further use). And it means that I can focus all my efforts on just one route plotting page now.

I hope all that makes sense, and that you're not feeling too hot. Or too cold. Or too anything.

Server update

11:44am, 11 Jun 2021
As things stand, the site is serving pages as normal, but the scheduled tasks that happen in the background are at a standstill at the moment.

As an example: when you log a training entry, it goes into our game queue. A scheduled task runs every couple of minutes, and moves things from the game queue into each of the games that you're signed up for (e.g. Fetchpoint, WSW, Conq etc). Then there's another scheduled task that picks things up from these queues, and processes them to update your zones, squares, bugs etc.

This is also why trader values didn't update properly overnight. They usually all change at midnight, to reflect another day dropping off the back of the 90 day valuation. However, when the runner logs a run, their value is recalculated correctly, but could have resulted in you losing credits. I'm really sorry, but I don't think I'm gonna try unpicking that :-) but please don't burn down the stock exchange.

The things that have stopped working are typically 'extensions' that have to be added on to a default installation of the coding languages that live on the server. It appears that *somehow* the coding language was updated to its latest version, but that the extensions were not updated/enabled.

The missing extensions (at least those that have raised their heads) have now been re-enabled. However it may take a bit of time for the game queues to settle down. There are currently about 1200 items of training sitting in the game queue. There's no need (and in fact, please don't) upload your run again, or spam refresh :-) I know that's what I'd do though, so no worries if you already have :-)

EDIT: have found the cause of the problem too. There's a bit of software on the server that automatically adds security patches as and when they are released. This is obviously a good thing. But apparently, it got a bit over-excited, and decided that I would also want the latest version of the coding language, not just the patched edition of the version it was happily running.

Minor code problem

6:40am, 11 Jun 2021
Hi folks,

I'm seeing quite a few errors in our server log - it looks like maybe something got auto-updated overnight, and as a result, a few bits of my code are not happy. So far, it appears that it's affecting Fitbit and Polar imports, "follow roads" within the route plotter, and potentially the creation of new markers within Fetchpoint. I'm working on sorting all that out, and will update when I can.

Cheers!

Presumably the Fetchpoint updater is broken.

Some little updates to your route list

4:15pm, 10 Jun 2021
I had my second AZ jab yesterday. All good so far - I got a run in this morning, which is an improvement on last time.

I've been making some changes to the 'Your Routes' page, to try to make it a bit more usable. The old page was somewhat uninspiring - it was just a list of all the routes you've created and saved using our route planner; or ones that you've saved from the maps in your training log.

One of the features of your route list is the ability to categorise your routes. Except it was a very tiresome process. You had to go to the route list, view the route, go to the edit screen, find the dropdown allowing you to choose a category, change it, press the save button - and then it would take you back to the main list. Not exactly the snappiest way to manage your category list.

There are nearly 10,000 Fetchies with a saved route, and about 3000 of those have 50 or more routes. So you'd think that the ability to categorise routes would be handy. There are about 1500 people who have tried using the categories - but only about 180 of them have 5 or more categories. Not everyone wants to be organised, but I figured that at least part of this was down to crappy usability.

My goal whilst spring-cleaning the page was to make it a good deal easier to transfer stuff between categories. I have 75 saved routes, and it took me about five minutes to spray them about into my newly-created categories.

My categories:

Races
Bedford
Stapleford
Wales
Devon
Peaks
IOW
Overseas
Watch Fails

Instead of having to go through too much faff, you just click the little folder icon next to a route (see the little purple circle in the screenshot), and choose the new destination category.

Just a few other notes:

1) if you remove a category, everything within it just goes back to 'Miscellaneous'.
2) you can click the minus symbols to close up a category, to clear down the stuff you don't want.
3) choosing a new category for a route *does* reload the page, which is not quite how I'd like it, but it's way quicker than the old method.

Here's the page, if you fancy a nosey:

  • Any chance of having a 'search' option on that page? So if eg. I wanted to find a route that probably has Pocklington in the name I could search for that and they'd all come up?

Feature requests - two years on!

1:22pm, 9 Jun 2021
The feature request page is now two years old - wow!
fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting

There are 608 live requests, which seems like a lot. But there are also 514 that I've marked as resolved. Sure, some of those are because they are duplicates, and some I've said no to. But as a source of direction for the site, it's been absolutely brilliant.

I always feel a bit bad when something gets a high vote, if I can't get it done. Usually this is because there's a bit too much spaghetti in the way. In these cases, I keep them in my head as something to work towards - so they still help steer my thinking.

There are 99,475 live votes in the system. This number goes down as well as up, because I keep things tidy by deleting votes on the ones I've marked as resolved. Voters are generally positive, with 26% yes votes, 12% no votes, and 62% in the middle who don't mind either way.

I did consider introducing a quota of (say) 100 yes votes for each person, to encourage you to focus on the stuff that means most to you, rather than the current system, which allows you to support everything. But (a) there are 83 people who have already exceeded this, including one person who has voted yes to 459 things; and (b) asking people to research a massive list, and chop and change all the time seems to be a bit of an ask. I want you to enjoy yourselves :-) Maybe there's a better option, where you can pick 10 favourites. Yeah, that might work - I'll have a think about that.

There are 796 different voters. If you're not one of that 796, then you're missing out on your opportunity to help steer the ship :-) I don't take your requests to management, and get approval from the board. I just do them, if I can!

Anyway... I've just made it a bit easier to get your voting done. Previously, when you clicked a voting button, the whole page would reload. As a big page, it can take a bit of time to load - so I can see that it was frustrating and a bit offputting. But thanks to Feature Request #1085 from shanksi, I've amended that page so that there's no reload. You can just tap the voting buttons, and it updates your choice pretty much instantly. The ones you haven't voted on are bright yellow, so it should be a lot easier to work your way through the list.

  • A request about requests If I may ;-) When you close a feature as resolved (eg the adding of a PB marker to races) it is impossible to comment on it any longer. However sometimes your implementation of the feature means I'd like to comment on the way it's implemented, do you think that would be possible? I know I could enter a new feature request but that loses the link to the original. My comment for the new PB flag in your race portfolio is it is fab but it would be good to be able to filter on that. Shall I enter it as a new request?

More than just a rainbow

4:18pm, 7 Jun 2021
For at least three years, I've changed the Fetch logo to its rainbow version during June each year. This is to show our support for LGBTQ+ people; for inclusivity; and acceptance of diversity.

I recently saw a post on social media from someone who was calling out companies who only pay lip service to the pride flag. It really got me thinking. This year, I've designed and sold a nice quantity of our rainbow shirts and vests. I've not just shown my support for the rainbow. I've profited from it too.

I hope that everyone who knows me feels like I am someone who tries to do the right thing - and I want to carry on being that person. I'm NOT seeking reassurance - but do please tell me, either in the comments or in private, if I can do better. We can all try to do better.

I'd like to make a donation to a suitable charity - so if you'd like to suggest one, please leave a comment. My own personal preference would be an organisation where the money is demonstrably put to good use. So perhaps a smaller charity where less money is eaten on overheads would be good.

And can I also take this opportunity to thank the person who got me thinking. I know that person is going through a really tough time at the moment. I hope this is a small positive to keep you going.

  • I also get annoyed at the "lip service" support of companies during this month, and especially all the sudden rainbow flags that appear in businesses around Manchester towards the end of August. Albeit I'm certainly not the poster-boy for Pride in any way.

That being said, it doesn't feel like lip service here. This site has always felt inclusive, and accepting. And you by extension. The fact that you're reflecting in this way kind of confirms that.

I know you said you're not looking for reassurance. Tough :) Keep being awesome.

  • I think its great having the logo changed every year and i always appreciate seeing the positive reception it gets, feels a very long way to how things were when I first "came out".
As for a charity to donate to, how about finding your nearest LGBTQ+ centre who field telephone calls for people who are struggling - i know there is one in Derby and most certainly in most cities so pick the nearest to you - i'm sure even a small donation to anyof the small little centre like these can make a big difference - keep up the good work I think it's ace !

The Leicester LGBT Centre leicesterlgbtcentre.org is a small charity doing good face to face work. This video from 3 years ago was a series of reports on their work on BBC East Midlands Today. The young trans lad from about 5 minutes is my son.

  • It's a challenge isn't it? I wore my NHS rainbow badge at work and wondered if I were being tokenistic. Then a couple of people stopped me to talk, and I realised that it really is a badge that says 'you can speak your truth' and was reassured. IMO the test comes when people take that risk to open up. How do we respond? So far I've seen rainbows on Fetch and a serious attempt to be inclusive and get it right. Can any of us do better? Probably, but we'll only find out how by being willing to listen. You've done that by asking the question.
