This will make Katie laugh.
I opened up Instagram yesterday evening, just before sleep - and it turns out they've given me a 24 hour ban
My suspicions are that I hit refresh one time too many, coupled with about 60 new followers, and a photo with (currently) 98 likes - quite a bit more than any other pic I've uploaded; and it must have triggered some Insta-alarm.
It says that I am blocked until April 30th, which is obviously today - but I'm thinking it's either (a) 24hrs from the point it began, or (b) that it's some different timezone. The further we get into the day, the more (a) seems likely. Hey ho.
Thank you to everyone who is now following me - I hope to post another pic later on, whenever they let me - but you are still free to view/follow/unfollow me at instagram.com
And a *huge* thank you to phal, who contacted me to offer Multiple Oodles of extremely useful insights into how to "do" Instagram. Her advice shows that I have plenty to learn, but suggests that it's possible to make the platform work as a useful way to get Fetch in front of more people. Nice one, ta
Phal, aka Alix Almond is a very talented artist - if you have a few minutes, don't bother leaving me a comment - go take a look at her work here: alixalmond.com

I saw someone's Instagram feed the other day. It was all white teeth and abs and pictures of grub and dogs posing and hashtags and 30,000 followers. It feels like an untapped source of people who might like Fetch. And whilst I don't have the teeth or the abs, I reckon there's enough going on here in Fetchland to keep up a steady stream of random stuff about the site, and about my adventures in not-especially-speedy-at-the-moment-land.
I thought I might try, for a while at least, to see what might be possible. I have had an Instagram account for a while, and have used it very sporadically. Is that even a thing? Very sporadic? Sporadically sporadic? Sporadically squared? Anyway. I have started putting stuff there.
If you are a 'gram person, and want to support my Probably Futile attempt to connect with the young folks, then give me a follow, and like whatever you like. Ta. PS there is also a link in the page footer.

In feature request 1111, Sigh asks if I'd consider selling FE branded Event Clips. In case you don't know they are an alternative to safety pins. You put one bit behind your vest, and the front bit has a little nodule on it that goes through the hole on your race number, and snaps it onto your running top. There's more info about them here: eventclip.net
I spoke to Event Clip, and they are sending me some samples with our logo - here's what they look like:
They also gave me their trade price list. I think I could sell them for £7 to include post and packing. The non-branded ones on the Event Clip site are £5.96 incl. 2nd class postage, so that's hopefully not too different.
I am totally ok either way, so please don't anyone feel like they have to say yes - but if there *is* interest in this, I can make it happen. And if not, I can send Sigh the samples
Leave a comment, and if you want to vote up the feature request, you can find it here: fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting?sort=id&keyword=1111
[Btw, next month I am hoping to get moving on the Fetch rainbow shirts and vests; and will also be looking to do some more traditional red tops too. More on that soon, but I feel like I've been all "selly", so I'm off to rinse my mouth out with water ]

As it's Tuesday, I thought it would be a nice opportunity to announce the allocation of funds for the Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) and Coaching in Running Fitness (CiRF) courses.
It turns out that, with an injection of an additional £35 from club funds, we are able to fund 1 x CiRF and **2** LiRF courses!
The winner of the CiRF vote was Moving Along - and when I contacted him with the good news, he made an awesome counter-offer. He was willing to split the funding with Ness, so that they could both get qualified. I knew we had two very good applicants when they both voted for each other!
The winner of the LiRF vote was Pegg, and the runner-up was Pothunter - so they will both be able to get their LiRF qualifications (just as soon as EA announce some more dates).
Commiserations to Bluefinch10k who just missed out. Hopefully if this all goes well, we can look at funding more of you to get your qualifications in future.
Given the pandemonium situation at the moment, it looks like the next available CiRF courses are towards the end of the year - so we have to wait a while to see our recruits get their stripes. But then we will hopefully have four club members in a great position to help support and encourage you in your training.
Congratulations to the lucky winners, thank you to everyone who voted, and to everyone who supports our club!

I've been looking at an *entirely optional* memento for the Castle Challenge, and have been swayed by Synge, who has been hoping for a slate coaster. As he helped me out by scoping out the entire 600 mile route, I felt like it was the right thing to do
Anyway... here's the draft design - it's 10cm x 10cm and it's 8mm thick slate (which may or may not be welsh slate - I am checking that). In the design pic, I've just pinched a random slate background off t'internet, but I've also attached a pic of what the coasters themselves will look like (approximately).
My plan is to do these at £10 each (which will include postage), and at some point to take pre-orders, so I know how many to buy. Feel free to leave a comment with your viewpoint - I will also get an fmail out to everyone who has signed up for the challenge.

Firstly, a jab symptom update. I am fine. A few evenings where I conked out on the sofa like a puppy, but nowt bad at all. And of course, it's Better Than The Alternative.
We're nearly two thirds of the way through our monthly Fetch chess league - and I haven't bored you with it for a few weeks now, so here goes
Since it began, it's got more popular! We currently have 66 players, plus two queued up to join when we reach May. They are spread across 15 divisions, with a max of five players in each one - so each player gets eight competitive games each month (twice against each opponent in their division).
Something that comes up fairly often is people who feel bad if they are losing a lot of games. So I wanted to share this, which is my rating graph:
I started at 1200, and got a few wins early on. The chess rating algorithm is a bit jumpy when you haven't played many games, so I actually got as high as 1417 in late November. If I played a 1400-rated player now, I'd get a nose bleed No, my rating has plummeted, month after month - but I'm hopeful that I've at least got control of my descent now, even if there's smoke coming out of both engines and my in-flight meal was fish
The point I wanted to make is that if you're worried about being rubbish, just keep going. It does take patience, and it really helps if you stick to no more than a couple of games at a time.
We play "day per move", which means you have a whole 24 hours to decide what to do - if you need it. There's a feature in the app where you can pretend to play your move. It's a lot easier mentally to see what it does to the board. And you can then pretend to be your opponent, and look for weaknesses in what you just did. Often, this means that you scrub out your original move and try something else. You can also replay all the moves in your match - so that if you get your ass kicked, you can rewind to the point where things felt ok, and think about what you could have done differently. It can help you in future matches, as you slowly start to spot threats. Sometimes, you don't need to think about winning, you just need to make sure your opponent doesn't get any chances. Like Steve Davis.
If you want to join in, you'll need to get a (free) chess.com account, and then sign up to the Fetch league here: fetcheveryone.com/chess.php - you'll get assigned to a division on the 1st of May. I started in division 3, got relegated a couple of times - and will hopefully just about hold on to mid-table this month.
Anyways. That's chess that is.

A big thank you for setting up the chess league and putting up with us brainstorming weird and wonderful ways to change the league. I thought I'd keep a note for posterity of my post-jab experience.
So far, not bad. As I lay down in bed last night, I could feel my arm a little bit - as if the school bully had punched me in the arm and stolen my Monster Munch*
This morning, I woke up with a bit of a thick head - not unlike a hangover head. My overnight heart rate was about 4-5 beats higher than it normally is. I took a couple of paracetamol at breakfast time, and that helped me get on top of the head - but I decided to give running a miss, as I've felt a wee bit floppy. I've felt a little bit like I'm in a daze for parts of the day, but it's not been too bad at all. My body is clearly doing what it needs to do with the magic juice
*we've been watching Snackmasters. It's pretty lightweight TV, with lots of recaps** and inanity - but it's also been quite good fun watching the chefs recreating well-known snacks. Plus I'm a sucker for those 'How It's Made' videos, and it's full of footage from the factory conveyor belts
**it is in no way as bad as Dogs Behaving Very Badly, which has about 7 minutes of unique footage in an hour long programme. And it's always the owners' fault

I was recently contacted by Xmiles, who asked if I would be interested in reviewing some of their products. XMiles was founded by Fetchie AntClark, so I agreed to give it a go. They set up an order for me, and it arrived pretty quickly (just a couple of days). Here's the box:
And here's what was inside, with a total price of just under £30:
Two things I liked straight away:
1) there was no waste packaging, just cardboard and paper. One of the obvious down-sides of any gel (at least, the ones that I've seen) is that they come in little plastic packets. It's frustrating to see them by the side of the road in races, or in the bushes on my favourite routes (but that says more about the people who are discarding them than the gels themselves). It would be nice if there was some better solution, but if ketchup hasn't cracked it in the last thousand years, then perhaps we have to accept that gels have some way to go. But XMiles are at least attempting to minimise any extra packaging waste.
2) The list of products had little biro marks next to them – so I knew that a real living person had checked and packed the goods. It's a small thing perhaps, but knowing that there's someone at the other end of the transaction who is directly involved, is reassuring.
Thanks to some annoying calf problems of late, my runs are not really long enough to trouble my onboard energy supplies. In fact, judging by the scales, I have a surplus! So I didn't feel able to field test these, and I think it'd be pointless me trying to unpick whether I felt more energetic etc. You should probably read the labels carefully if you plan on trying any of these. But I figured that I could at least treat them like a tasting menu, and let you know how I got on. I'll also be mindful of how easy they are to open – there's nothing worse than pawing at a gel packet as the plastic stretches rather than tears.
Back when I first discovered gels, I'm pretty sure they came in three flavours: orange, purple, and tropical (which I reckon was just orange and purple mixed together). These days, a wander through the gel aisle of a friendly online nutrition shop like Xmiles is more like rummaging through a Masterchef finalist's fridge.
Let's get another thing out of the way - having volunteered in the suncream tent at Ironman Lanzarote, I have seen people use all sorts of things for fuel – pork pies, boiled potatoes, jam tarts – some of them were even eying up the suncream! So gels are definitely not for everyone. But for some, they do offer a neat and portable option for carrying fuel during longer events – just make sure you take your wrappers home! Let's get tasting!
Unived Gels
These are vegan-friendly, which was nice to see. They have a little slit on the side, which meant that when you tear the top, the wrapper stays in one piece, which is a nice touch, and a simple idea. A side notch made them easy to open, but the consistency caught me out. Although I was sat at my desk, the first one I opened squirted out of the packet a little.
Dark Chocolate Mint
I really liked this one, and wanted to finish it! Really definite minty chocolate taste, very smooth and rich, and definitely something I'd consider. Reminiscent of minty Magnums.
Black Cherry
I think I'd recommend they rename this one 'Blue Slush Puppy'. More syrup-like in consistency than any slush I've had, but pretty decent all the same.
'ELITE' Vanilla Sea Salt
A bigger packet (75g vs 41g for the others). I could taste the vanilla and the salt, but found it way too sickly and back-of-the-throaty for my tastes
---
Spring Real Food Energy Gels
These have two holes at the top – I'm not sure if this is for display purposes, or for threading onto a running belt. They also feature the cool slit at the side to keeps them in one piece. Pretty easy to open, and I did so a bit more carefully – but unnecessarily – these are a 'firmer' gel.
Koffee
I'm always wary of anything that uses an alternative spelling, and in this case, my suspicions were correct. Yeah, there was a hint of something that might once have been near coffee, but the consistency was like slightly grainy smooth peanut butter, and had me pulling a face and reaching for a drink of water.
Mango
Much more palatable – almost as if someone has pureed a mango and put it in a packet – which is pretty close to what they've done. Nice work with this one!
Peanut Butter
As someone who can eat peanut butter from the jar, I had high hopes for this one after the mango. But it didn't do it for me, perhaps because peanut butter was only the third-listed ingredient. There was a tang to it unlike any other peanut butter I've tasted – and I will stick to the jar.
---
Kendal Mint Co
With no fancy holes, and a more old-school tear-off top (it'd be nice to see them adopt the slit system), these are vegan and gluten free, and promise 'easy digestion'. High hopes after the Unived choccy mint experience earlier! Fairly easy to open, despite my worries that the plastic would stretch at an inconvenient moment. Quite liquidy in consistency.
Citrus & Mint
A bright and breezy lemony flavour, with the coolness of mint following it up. Not bad at all, but I think I'd prefer one or the other.
Raspberry & Mint
I preferred this one to the citrus – I think the raspberry goes better with the mint; but the mint does start to take over, the more you slurp! I was pleased to see on their website that they have a pureplay mint version.
---
Mountain Fuel
Another tear off top, leaving the possibility of accidentally dropping a wee bit of plastic whilst on your adventures. Or at least they would, but they are really difficult to open unfortunately, as the plastic fights back – and I had to go fetch some scissors.
Ultra Chia Gel – Raspberry
I really liked the consistency and flavour of this one – a lot like those smoothies you get in meal deals at Boots and the like. Very tasty – just a shame I had to fight so hard to get to it.
Ultra Chia Gel – Apple & Cinnamon
Sorry Mountain Fuel, it's not you, it's me. I don't like cinnamon – so gave it a little try, but it was another face-puller.
Sports Jelly – Lemon & Lime
At the third attempt, I managed to get this one open without mangling it. And it was another nice fresh flavour.
---
Hüma
Simple tear-off tops, and pretty easy to open. No spillage, as there's plenty of room to grip the packet 'above' the contents. Shorter and wider than the other packets. Vegan friendly, and gluten free.
Chia Energy Gel Plus – Blackberry & Banana
Not to my taste, but a friendly consistency. A slightly grainy feel makes them feel a bit more like regular food than some of the smoother gels.
Chia Energy Gel – Chocolate with Caffeine
This tasted pretty strongly of dark chocolate, but was somehow not quite like any chocolate I'd tasted before (and not in the same way that a flake is). I think the incongruous feeling came because I am used to chocolate being solid or hot and drinkable. But maybe worth trying if you lust for chocolate during your runs.
---
And that's the end of my taste test. I dread to think how many calories I have just consumed, and Katie said I seem to be a bit manic Please be assured that I haven't eaten all of each gel – just taken a little taste, and in some cases, spat it back out! If you'd like to check out Xmiles, here's a special link that earns Fetcheveryone approximately 4% of whatever you spend there: xmiles.co.uk?aff=22 (I've also added that to our affiliate links in the site footer). Thank you. Right, I'm heading off to go base jumping!

Great blog! I absolutely agree with the slit thing that stops you losing the top end of the gel back. The alternative is a quick shove back in the pocket (with high risk of stickiness later) or trying to hold onto it alongside the main packet till you find a bin. If you're a member of FERC (or considering joining), there's just a few days left if you want to apply to have us pay for you to do the Coaching in Running Fitness or Leadership in Running Fitness course. It's my hope that the successful candidates will be able to support their clubmates, so it should be great for FERC - but it could also be your springboard to further coaching qualifications.
There's more information on how to apply (and how this came about) in my earlier blog here: fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2021/3#blog421316
(TL;DR = you need to be a member of FERC, and you need to email me your plea - FERC members will vote on it next week).

464 people signed up now, which is awesome - more than I hoped for
I thought I'd write a blog to capture your suggestions for improvements to the challenge page.
I had an idea about "points of interest", whereby people could add stuff along the route - and when other people reach those points, they get a notification saying "come look at this interesting thing that you went past".
There's also a strong chance that I will be able to give you 'tickets in a hat' for each 50 miles that you collect before the time's up; with a prize at the end. Working on that at the moment
But I'm also looking for usability improvements - literally anything. I won't make any changes 'til Tuesday now, but it'd be great to capture your thoughts.
Cheers

Some sort of visual representation of a Slough of Despond above your head when going through Newport would be reasonable. This can be virtually or in real life.gambrinus
On a serious note though, this is the only virtual event thing I have ever done. Hopefully it will prod some serious buttock after a rather lethargic March.7:28pm, 2nd Apr 2021 -
On mobile if you have the map on the top of the screen and the list at the bottom of the screen you can move either of those 2 elements but not navigate the page. If that doesn’t make sense I can show you tomorrowElsie Too7:28pm, 2nd Apr 2021

I had one mad idea, which is that the first one to finish gets to run back around the course picking up others in a virtual "wings for life" style race, sort of. But then I thought that might put some people off joining in altogether. If collecting others also allowed them to continue then that's be okay though.Sigh7:29pm, 2nd Apr 2021

Are there going to be badges for reaching the castles? 😄🤞🤞BareHeadEm7:31pm, 2nd Apr 2021

So far very impressed with it - did it take much development?um
A few first thoughts/requests
- any chance of a full screen map option? (like the big map in conquersize)
- maybe add the name on the 'mouse over' user pic, or maybe that will diminish as we get more spaced out and people are more obvious. Or I need to learn 463 other user pics.
- 50 mile (or so) markers along the route? Or will the 100 mile stages become obvious?
But it's also great as it is.7:32pm, 2nd Apr 2021 -
There's the most southerly point in mainland Wales around by Lavernock somewhere which I think you go past. Also the Marconi plaque (first radio transmission over water, or something), and the anti-aircraft battery from WW2 knocking around by there as well.gambrinus7:33pm, 2nd Apr 2021
-
If you can get my iPad issue fixed, it would be good to click/tap on a map pin and get the option to see that point on streetview, rather than finding that person on the list and clicking on the glasses.Fragile Xmas Ornament7:52pm, 2nd Apr 2021
-
It's fab, Fetch, thank youRosehip
I'd like to see the people whose training I follow in a different colour on the map and/or the list so I can find them easily.7:54pm, 2nd Apr 2021 -
Looks very foggy around Cardiff at the moment, judging by the map.Chrisity8:18pm, 2nd Apr 2021
-
I asked Synge if he could put the 50 mile route maps up with the mile numbers on, so that we can get a better idea of where we might want to get to. He put two on the thread, but could all of them be put in the thread sidebar please?Chrisity8:23pm, 2nd Apr 2021
-
I struggled with page navigation on mobile (Android, Samsung Galaxy S9) with the map and names on view. I'd quite like to see placements through the "checkpoints" at each castle, so that in September I can see how I did over time (50M in 280th, 100M in 300th, etc...)JamieKai *chameleon*
And if we're in wishing territory then it'd be nice for there to be an app so that part way through my run I can look at my phone to see where I am, to see if my virtual surroundings are nicer than my real surroundings (Spoiler: they are)8:57pm, 2nd Apr 2021 -
some sort of passport control badge or something as you pop over the border.....Ocelot Spleens10:15pm, 2nd Apr 2021
-
With such a large number of (wonderful) participants, how about a "Zoom to my location" button on the map and a "Go to me" button on the leaderboard? (But it's a brilliant implementation already!)♪♫ Synge ♪♫8:03am, 3rd Apr 2021
-
Synge - you can zoom to any participant on the map by clicking on the red target next to them, or the goggles to see what their view is 😃 I've also noticed this morning that there is a link at the top of the map to where I am, not sure if that's appeared since your suggestion or not? It's ace, I'm loving it, and thanks for the badge!BareHeadEm10:06am, 3rd Apr 2021

Great work thus far Fetch - liking what we have very muchCumbriAndy
Just a thought - on the basis that 'everybody loves a graph', any chance of some sort of rolling progress tracker against the mileage required to complete by a given/selected date? A bit like the one we have for our annual targets. No need, for me, to show me anybody else's progress or create any more 'league tables' but I would like to be able to judge for myself where I am against my own arbitrary goals. Thanks for thinking about it.11:49am, 3rd Apr 2021 -

There Are Some Really Sexy Girls On Fetch
Comments
More than likely it could be the influx of likes and followers..... probably made you look like some kind of bot was at work!
For anyone visiting Fetch on insta, under Fetch's pictures/posts on insta, please can you LIKE, COMMENT (even if it's just an emoticon!) and SAVE (the little ribbon on the RHS under the picture - it'll just store it in the instaworld somewhere) because Instagram *really* likes that kind of thing and it'll help it be seen by ooodles more people.
In fact, if you do that for anyone whose photo or captions you like on Insta, they'll be super grateful.
Thank you, that's really kind of you Mr Fetch xxx ((())) You are very welcome. We need fetcheveryone to take over the world! (Can I shamelessly plug that I'm on instagram too link on my website )
(I'm going to run away before Dio shouts at me for not doing what I'm meant to be doing again..... )
