For the last 3-4 years, I've been staying up 'til midnight on the last day of November. I'm alive, alert, awake and enthusiastic - waiting for the moment when the first door of the Festive Fetch Calendar opens.
Someone has usually entered within about 30 seconds, and I watch a few more come in before relaxing and getting some kip.
I don't go anywhere near the Christmas code throughout the year - but it really is a bit like getting the trimmings out of the attic. Something is always a bit squashed or bent, and I still have to check the lights one by one, to see why they aren't working.
This year is the eighth edition of the calendar. I normally start putting feelers out for prizes in September, and then every couple of weeks from then on, I send some more emails to hassle the companies who have not yet replied. I thought I might have to replace one prize with a block of lard with the company logo stamped on the side - but they came through
There are a couple of new ones in the list this year. And a couple who have had to say no - which seems to be mainly down to supply issues because of Br*x*t. And a few returning too, which is brilliant to see.
The number of entrants last year was up by about 30% on the previous record, which is pretty nuts. I don't know if we'll get those numbers again - it was a strange year. But heck, this one's been more than a bit weird too, hasn't it?
I hope that there are some deserving winners. I hope you can see it in your hearts to support the companies that have put forward their goodies. That little tickbox underneath where you fill in your email address - tick it if you can. Even if they send you some emails and you unsubscribe later. They've given us a chance, so it's nice to give them a chance too.
Most of all, I hope you enjoy it. I will try to throw some new challenges in (and if you can think of any that might work well, leave me a comment) so that there's plenty of fun to be had, whether you win or lose.
Thank you to everyone who has continued to support the site this year, and to those of you who have joined up and added your support. I am still battering my way through your feature requests and bug reports. It means a lot to me to give you all a chance to steer the ship, and I hope I've given you plenty of evidence throughout the year that I really am listening. And 17 years since the adventure began, I still love rolling up my sleeves first thing on a Monday morning, and making adjustments and improvements here and there to improve the experience for you. Because if you enjoy the experience, you will hopefully want to carry on being part of this community, and making it a wonderful place that I am proud to be part of.
For those of you who aren't aware, December 12th is Fetch Independence Day - and Katie and I will be marking this with our traditional Star Wars pic. Spoiler alert - the challenge on the 12th will be to join in the celebration by uploading a pic of a scene from a movie that makes you smile. Have a think about it over the next couple of weeks. Here's our pic from last year:

I unearthed this page yesterday - and I think it deserves a bit more coverage than it's had over the last year (i.e. more than not much):
fetcheveryone.com/books.php
It probably needs a bit of work to make it properly fun to look at (e.g. some filters, or some boxes that pull out the best choices), and a better way of tidying duplicates - but it's still a handy list.
I have particularly enjoyed some of the 1- and 2-star reviews
Definitely my favourite book from the list is "The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances" - it makes me laugh a very lot.

Just a quick one (but also something that tends to come up a lot in December and January).
Thread owners can now update the title of their threads, not just the description. So if you've got a '2021' thread that you'd like to make into a '2022' thread (or even just drop the year from the title), just click 'Edit Description' over in the thread description box, and you can amend the title.
See, I told you it was a quick one.
I'm aware that some folks might see this as setting a precedent, because as well as updating years, you can also change typos, grammatical errors, or maybe even the entire title of the thread. So if that's possible for thread titles, why not for individual posts as well?
My thinking is that the thread titles are very prominent, and if they look like we're a collection of doofii, that doesn't look good on our community as a whole. Whereas if you make a funny typo in a post, well, that's just all of us laughing at one person - which is fine
But more seriously, the uneditable post policy means two things: 1) there's less work for me and the server to maintain amendments in the case of disputes; and 2) it encourages everyone to think about what they post. And I think that in general, that's worked well for us for the last 17 years
Calendar tomorrow! I've checked the code for rust spots, and oiled the moving parts. All seems well

I've been working out some bugs and feature requests for the annual infographic, in time for sharing season
The first one was a feature request (#997) from SPR - he wanted to choose the starting month, rather than it being tied to January. So now you can choose any 12 month period.
The second was a bug first reported by Bowman - the ascent wasn't looking at all right. I've just messaged him about my fix - but it got so long that I wanted to share it with everyone.
The reason it stopped working was because I changed the way I grab elevation data, to use watch info rather than calling an elevation service for each training entry. [And this is because the elevation service (it's by Google) had a free usage cap, which in turn meant that our 'follow roads' toggle on the route planner was compromised, because that's also subject to a usage cap. I made the call that the route planning would be a better one to prioritise. If you don't already, please consider setting up a small donation to the site to help me sort stuff like this. Ta!]
So your infographics should now be showing a much greater ascent, because I've adjusted them to look in the right place.
I spent yesterday trying to work out an algorithm that returns similar 'total ascent' figures to Garmin. I was using all my bike rides as a data set (because most of my runs are fairly flat).
The problem is that the raw data is a little bit noisy. So if you just add up the changes from one data point to the next, you get over-inflated totals (flat roads go up and down by 0.2m quite frequently).
I have switched to using a rolling average to smooth out the data, and a minimum threshold change to remove some noise. So for example, a change of 0.1m is ignored.
This meant that across my 20 bike rides I got within a couple of percent of Garmin's total. With individual rides, this is still sometimes off by as much as 10-15%. Applying this algorithm back to my running, it was a bit further out - so there's still room for fine tuning.
However... I also took a GPX file from one of my rides, and tried uploading it to various services, each one promising to calculate my total ascent. Not one of them came up with the same figure. Included in this was the Ordnance Survey which feels like it should be the gold standard. My example file generates 144 metres of climb on Garmin, but 177 metres of climb on OS.
It appears that there's no real agreement on what constitutes sufficient 'up-ness' - but I'll keep playing round with the data. I was also using my own experience of my ride - trying to remember what was a hill, and what was flat. But even that plays tricks - there's a rolling road locally that plays with my head It looks like it goes up-down-upppppp. But really it's up-flat-uppp. That's pretty annoying when you're hoping for a little speed boost to get you up the hill.
I wanted to share this, because the more people that know a bit about it, the more likely it is that you'll be able to chip in next time someone posts on the forum to say there's an altitude discrepancy In my opinion, the underlying data is pretty flaky - and once that happens, it's hard to build good analysis. We are spoiled by the 2D accuracy of GPS, but the altitude information that goes with it, even if you have a barometric GPS, is nowhere near as good.
A few more tweaks and bugs to the infographic are still to come... Have a nice Friday!

Thanks for you efforts ... and for amusing blog titles!um
Have a bonus mince pie.
From my experience, multiple watches, all garmin, over quite a few years, the altitude can lag. ie if I'm walking up a hill and stop for a rest/photo/admire the view, for the next 30-60 secs, the altitude creeps up and up before stabilising at a figure higher than when I stopped.
I haven't though to try it on the descent and see if it takes a while to drop.8:32am, 26th Nov 2021 -
I would have thought the question of how much elevation change there was on a route is one to which there is no true *correct* answer. A bit like how long is a stretch of coastline.paul the builder

The elevation that you get from OS maps on line is consistently inflated and far from the gold standard. I have had cause this year to check numerous routes plotted on OS maps using a watch with a barometric altimeter that continually rechecks itself against data points (and is therefore very accurate unless you get a very fast moving front). The OS maps numbers are consistently wrong by as much as 30-40%.flyingfinn9:12am, 26th Nov 2021

I think this is a helpful page by Garmin, too: support.garmin.comSigh
"Elevation calibrated by GPS is accurate to +/-400 feet with a strong GPS signal."
That's a significant variance!
PS Glad there was a hyphen in "up-ness" otherwise that could have been offensive9:12am, 26th Nov 2021 -
The OS maps height database will generate significant height differences if you are on a level path (i.e. an old railway) that crosses an area with noticeable height differences (as will a GPX) on either side, which suggests it is extrapolating between points in a fairly well spaced database (probably to reduce the size of the database the online model uses). A good barometric altimeter that is reset at regular intervals, in stable weather conditions will always be the gold standard.flyingfinn9:26am, 26th Nov 2021

Well i dont think its that easy that "Garmin constantly inflates Ascent" I have checked my garmin 945 with the altitude meter and its spot on the elevation where i live. And its very hilly, and mostly is between a few meters, or dead accurate on my normal runs ascents. So if garmin inflates or everyone else deflates is probably hard to tell.Frosty The Bowman 🇸🇪9:39am, 26th Nov 2021

Garmin state: "Barometric Altimeter Accuracy of Outdoor Products:iRan
With proper calibration, the barometric altimeter of an outdoor watch or handheld will report elevation readings ranging from -2,000 to 30,000 feet with an accuracy of +/-50 feet (Calibration by GPS is accurate to +/-400 feet). Elevation values greater than 30,000 feet can be generated, but may not be accurate due to environmental factors."

Um- I did see that link - but I am guessing that any third party lookup would involve fees. I’ve also wondered about developing my own database of altitude data, based on averages - but my concern is that the volume of data, processing and retrieval costs would make it difficult. One of those times where I wish I had unlimited tech at my disposal.fetcheveryone10:21am, 26th Nov 2021

Bowman doesn't the 945 not have a built in barometer? In which case it isn't just relying on GPX data and should be very accurate (far more than Garmins or anything else that only uses GPX data to calculate heights and ascent).flyingfinn
The statement "Garmin constantly inflates Ascent" would be more accurately put as "Garmins and other devices that use only GPX information to calculate ascent will consistently produce inaccurate data (usually inflated) due to the inaccuracies of GPX in the third dimension (it was only ever designed to work in 2D to give users a fix on a paper map).10:22am, 26th Nov 2021 -

FF - my 935 has barometric data, and it’s not the overall accuracy that’s the issue. It’s the noise in the data - the little +-0.2 metres that build up. Working out how much of that is noise is the issue I am tackling.fetcheveryone10:27am, 26th Nov 2021

No comment other than a brief concern about NessSerendippily10:41am, 26th Nov 2021
-
Fetch - I'm not sure that is a problem that you will ever solve without using an impossibly detailed database. As Um's link suggests a barometric altimeter will usually give you the most accurate answer (as many of the small changes of height will be real but impossible to represent in any useable database) but it is still an estimate and anything else practical will likely to be a more inaccurate estimate. Your algorithm is likely to be in closer agreement with your Garmin on bike rides because your speed is higher so that Garmin sampling points are further apart and closer to resolution of a mapping database (see Paul's comment about measuring the length of a coast line).flyingfinn10:46am, 26th Nov 2021

Not sure if it's any use but Open-Elevation have a free-to-use public API (and a free Docker container) that was reasonable when I needed to use one. It's uses the STRM DEM dataset which is reckoned to be one of the best (until LIDAR ones become widely available). don't know if the public API would cope with your volumes.flanker7:34pm, 26th Nov 2021

I've added a 'Mute' button on each thread, which will let you remove that thread from the main forum list.
It moves to your 'Muted' list, which is accessible via the main forum page (or the forum sub-menu). You can use that page to restore threads back to the main forum if you change your mind.
If you also happen to be following a thread that you've muted, you'll still get notifications of new posts, but why would you do that, huh?
You'll also still get a notification if someone mentions you on one of your muted threads.
This feature (#295, proposed by MsG) was probably suggested as a way of avoiding getting triggered by the occasional high-emotion discussion that a few threads are prone to. But it's also pretty handy for tidying up threads that you know you're not gonna have any thing to do with. Like the mince pie counting thread. Freaks

I've been making some more adjustments to the site navigation today. Thanks to naughty_nickers for making this feature request.
There's a little star in the menu bar on desktop and mobile:
Click the star to add the current page to your own personal shortcuts list.
On desktop, you can find a list of your shortcuts in the toolbar right at the top of the site.
On mobile, this will appear in the main dropdown menu, but ONLY if you have shortcuts.
The old shortcuts menu led to a fixed set of options - but now you can build your own list of favourite pages. No more losing stuff you want to check back on later
As with any new feature, let me know if you break it, and do let me know what you think. Thin end of the wedge; hell in a hand cart; it's different, I don't like it; change is not good... that kind of thing

Round about now, there are *a lot* of parkrunners and other Saturday morning types pressing stop on their watches.
Our new Garmin import system means that I can put these imports into a queue, so that the Fetch server can still work well whilst it imports them.
To alleviate fears over training going missing, I've added a queue box that pops up at the top of this page:
fetcheveryone.com/training-home.php
It looks at the oldest item in the queue to estimate the wait time, so you can get an idea of when your training will arrive. When there's no queue, there's no box! Right now, we're pulling in training from about 11 minutes ago.
Hopefully most of you still have your hands on your knees

...my feet.
Just over 400 miles of cycling for the year now, and perhaps the two things I worry about most is falling off or getting knocked off. It's been great to get into it, whilst my running has been on an injury break. But it's always in the back of my mind that I'm in greater peril whilst careering about at three times my normal speed, near speeding chunks of metal that I can safely avoid with all my running routes.
Imagine my surprise then, when on my little 2.5 mile taster-session run yesterday, far away from cars, at a nice gentle pace, pretty clouds, scenery etc... I tripped on a rock and absolutely stacked it
Here's a pic of my knee, if you want to see the damage:
It's amazing how quickly the trickle reaches your socks!
When I landed, my first concern was that I'd landed in a cowpat. It's the sort of place where there are often cowpats - but this was just a circle of mud. A mudpat. For sure it was. And I actually got up grinning, because of (a) the delicious irony; (b) my calf was still fine; (c) my boy gave me his old airpods, and they stayed in; and (d) I was having a running adventure, which I have very much missed!!
Here I am walking over the railway bridge, still grinning:
The knee is fine btw. I've just been for a 20mi bike ride. Much safer

Did you know that you can set up your browser with a preferred first language? If you only speak English, and aren't an i18n coder, then I would guess not. But yes, you can!
Within Chrome, you go to Settings > Advanced > Languages, and add your preferences in order. Then when you visit sites that are responsive to this, they can serve you content in your own language. Isn't that cool? You can do the same in Safari, and probably all the others too.
As part of rebuilding the menu structure for the site, I took the opportunity to make it possible to insert translations for the menu items. Then, with lots* of help from Google translate, I prepared a list of translations and slotted them into a special file.
*NB Welsh speakers - I've probably made more than a few mistakes. Drop me a line if you can help!
If Fetch detects that your first choice language is Welsh, it will give you a menu structure that looks a bit like this:
Yeah, so the rest of the page, and all your forum contributions, blogs, comments etc are still in English - but it's a little step towards making the site friendlier to a wider audience.
I've been looking at the 'preferred language' stats of our visitors over the last 24 hours, just to see where best to focus our efforts. Once I'd sifted out the bots, the top three were German, Swedish and Italian. Anyone fancy a bash at translating about a hundred different menu options? Or tackling your own language? I mean, the one you speak. Not your own words for things.

When I used to work for a living, one of the things I managed was a WW quote development, which had a file of English 'elements', which we then translated into the 60 or so languages needed. Including American. (and any country specific legal requirements additional to straight text translations)
And used your approach - ie an in house auto-ish translation, then tuned by local superusers. Once we got to the 'inter language arguments on exact phrasing' we assumed we were close enough.
The hardest part? Any of the abbreviations in tables (eg VAT, No., Disc% etc) Or where the 4 character english word was 36 characters in german, and 'no shortening' was deemed acceptable).1:23pm, 18th Nov 2021 -
Please, please, can I make a plea that people only translate into their native language or one that they command as well as their native language. Otherwise it has the potential to be just embarrassing. Just as a benchmark, I pass for native German in conversation, but would not translate anything written into German unless it was most definitely for information only, and then unwillingly and with lots of caveats.LindsD1:23pm, 18th Nov 2021

I've updated the navigation for mobile users. Rather than separating the menu out into two separate options (one for top level categories, and one for the sub-categories), I've amalgamated it into a tree structure, which will hopefully make mobile navigation a bit easier.
There's also a new breadcrumb trail (that's the stuff across the top in the dark red bar), so that you can see which category and sub-category you are in. The dropdown menu also attempts to illustrate this with a bit of highlighting and bolding. I've probably not applied the breadcrumb code to every page - so if you see one that looks like it doesn't have a category (it might just be coming up under the 'Home' category), then give me a shout.
We are at about 50% mobile use now, so I think it's important to show the mobile generation just how much stuff there is on Fetch. Asking them to delve into one menu, then find the button that opens the next menu... seems like the long way round.
I hope you like it.

@Roo - regarding the click count... I think that's only the case if where you want to go is a top-level page, and even then, only if it's in a section other than the one you're currently in.fetcheveryone
I also draw a distinction between "interaction" clicks that instigate things to happen on the page, and "server" clicks that make your browser request a whole new page. The latter are slower, and used to be a huge focus back in the day when page load times used to be a significant factor in user experience, and when screens were big enough that a mouse journey from one side to the other required some effort. These days, I think there's more emphasis on intuitive navigation - I'm a big fan of this book: amzn.to
Under the old system, let's say you began on the home page and wanted to upload a picture. you'd need to open the menu (interaction click), then click 'Gallery' (server click). When the page came back, you'd need to open the submenu (interaction click), then click 'Upload Pictures' (server click). Four clicks.
Under the new system, you open the menu (interaction click), then click Gallery (interaction click), then click 'Upload Pictures' (server click).10:47am, 18th Nov 2021 -
Everyone else likes it MrFetch so I'm sure it is better. I'm just having a little surprised lurch when I click "forum" or "blogs" on the first menu and instead of whizzing straight to the forums or to the blog list it gives me another drop down instead. I don't think it needs changed or even justified since Everyone seems to like it apart from weird little me. 🙃 it is easier to get to sub-menu places, with less page loading, but slightly more interaction needed to get to the front page of each section than previously.RooA12:23pm, 18th Nov 2021
I'll be closing the preorder at the end of the day. There might be some spares when the batch arrives, but I can't make any promises - so if you've been wanting one, today's the day to get your order in if you want to be sure. And as always, if you want one, but need to wait before you pay, get your order in, and let me know your plan re payment.

There's a new feature in the forum
If you want to mention someone when you write a post, look for the @ button. It's in the same place as the bold, italic, underline options. See?
Click it, and it gives you a box where you can start typing the name of a Fetchie. Type the first three characters, and it should bring back all the matches. You can either keep typing at this point to keep filtering the available options, or you can just click the one you want.
This drops a code into the post, that will look a bit like this {USER 12345}, although it'll have square brackets. When you submit your post, the code will automatically turn into a link to that person's profile; AND it will send them a notification. If you want to draw someone's attention to a post, it's the ideal way to do it.
It doesn't work with blogs or comments just yet, but let's see how we go.
The exception is me I was worried that I'd have dozens of notifications from all over the place - so if you want to alert me to anything, just drop me a line via the Help link, which is at the top and bottom of every page on the site. Putting all my stuff into the same silo makes it easier for me to manage.
Cheers

There's a link above the map on training entries to trim car journeys and accidents off your training routes.
I've just tidied up the page, because it was looking pretty awful on mobile. On the left is how it used to look, and on the right is how it looks now:
With the old page, the map was almost off the page, which must have made it difficult to see what impact the slider was having. Now the slider is right next to the map (FR#1250), which should help. And I've made some adjustments to the little stat boxes so that they sit side-by-side on a small screen, rather than the ugly stacking thing they were doing.
All I've got to now is debug the code that sends your newly trimmed run back to Conquercise, WSW and Fetchpoint. The first two should be no problem, but I might have to concede defeat on the latter, because when you hoover up Fetchpoint markers, they get deleted.
If you see any other pages that look a bit crappy or are difficult to use on mobile, do please send me a feedback: fetcheveryone.com/feedback-bugreport.php - normally a few minor tweaks can make a big difference.

I’m not sure if it’s because you were playing or a request or a bug but the pace bands and route etc wouldn’t split when I split my intervals session into WU and intervals last week. I've been following 'The Environment Thread' over the last few days - there's some interesting stuff on there: fetcheveryone.com/forum/the-environment-thread-61513
Fetchie mityellow asked me whether the Fetch servers were renewably powered. I didn't actually know, so I set out to check. It turns out that our hosting provider, Positive Internet, use only green electricity from 100% renewable sources. They're based in Cambridgeshire, and so a lot of their power comes from wind turbines. That's nice, innit?
But before I get too excited, I must also remember that my dog will produce* anything up to 17 tonnes of CO2 over his lifetime** - that's the equivalent of ten return flights to New York: wired.co.uk - he's about eight flights in - I wonder if I can swap him for a free holiday?
*and I thought the poo was the worst thing he produced.
**assuming he behaves himself.

I've cycled 300 miles since the start of October - looking for something to do to keep me busy whilst I give my calf a rest. I've tried a couple of short runs (<2.5 miles) over the last few days, and though the first one was ok, I came back from the second one and the calf tightened up a bit.
But that's ok... I've enjoyed the cycling. I've noticed some things that are different (at least for me):
1) there's an inbuilt effort-recovery cycle. All my running routes are pretty flat and away from road crossing. With cycling, it feels like you get more extremes, whether it's hills, or traffic lights, or getting a bit lost.
2) surfaces matter. Today I found a newly tarmac-ed road that was also closed and just slightly downhill. It was lined with trees with beautiful yellow-green autumn leaves, and a gentle breeze treated me to a beautiful show, before depositing me in a lovely little village. An absolute gem. And it felt like sweet nectar compared to some of the pitted uneven surfaces I've found. I know that running through a boggy field is different to running on a compacted trail - but today's entire route would have felt homogenous if I'd run it.
3) wind matters. Ok, it makes a big difference when I'm running too - but on a bike it's somehow easier to swear loudly. And not just headwinds and sidewinds. Sometimes larger vehicles can give you some gut-churning gusts.
4) drivers. In 300 miles, I've had just the one driver who was noticeably completely oblivious to my existence. I know this, because had I not braked hard, I would have been under his car. I shouted a lot of bad words at him. I've had quite a few who give you that "wtf?" moment. Like the person today who waited to pull out until I'd gone past (great), then overtook me (ok), and then slowed to a crawl, before looking like they were going to pull in on the left, before suddenly taking a right turn (wtf?). And another person who sat behind me at a traffic lights... I cycled away, they followed at a respectful distance (great), until we reached a ninety degree left bend on a narrow road with high hedges, and they decided it was an ideal time to overtake (wtf?). I have to say, that people have mostly been pretty awesome at choosing their overtaking moments, and doing so with plenty of width. But I hope those who get a bit too close are good at lip-reading, because I've got really good at enunciating my reviews.
5) changing the plan changes everything. Today I had to abandon my planned route at 17 miles, because the whole road was being dug up. There was no obvious way around it, so I had to wing it until I found some place names I recognised. I've been very used to following a route on my watch, so it changed the complexion of the ride.
6) technique helps. With the help of the 'Cycling for Noobs' thread, I've got better at planning my gear changes before they become *absolutely* necessary - particularly using the front rings wisely. To my relatively fresh legs, some of the gear combos using the small front ring feel indistinguishable from some of the big ring combos. And I've got the hang of getting out of the saddle a bit more, which helps with big hills, but also means that small ups and downs don't sap momentum. Not bragging, but I recently repeated the first route I did (16.6 miles), and managed to do it 7 mins quicker with a bit more savvy. I've also sussed that it's important not to rush up the gears when a nice downhill presents itself, and focus on building that momentum.
7) I've been lucky. Aside from the 'not getting smushed by a car' thing, I've not had any tyre, chain or falling off issues. So far I have not taken a pump, tube or anything sensible like that. I do wonder what the average number of punctures per 1000 miles is typical. Any offers?
8) padding is not simple. I have two padded backside options. The first is a pair of shorts that Gore sent me some years ago. I think they would have been in the £80 range back then, and there's a big pad in them. I don't find them as comfortable as the trisuit I bought in 2011, which probably cost about the same, and doesn't have as much padding. It must be in the right place.
9) it's not been as cold as I imagined. I have some fingerless gloves (and thank you once again Mandymoo for sending me these - they've been absolutely brilliant), a long sleeve running top, shorts, and knee socks that I don't pull up. I am surprised that I can still get away with this in November.
10) it's given me ideas. I like the idea of a sportive, although today I also think I found the upper limit to my comfortable riding distance. I did 40 miles, and my quads were a wee bit sore at the end, although they seem ok now - just tired. I also like the idea of a long A to B ride - like cycling to my folks house in Wales. But I need to build up my stamina first!
11) and finally... it's given me ideas for the site. There's the map of places to refuel: fetcheveryone.com/poi.php and the gradient analysis: fetcheveryone.com/training-summary-pacebygradient.php - both came from getting an inkling of an understanding of what cyclists might need, and what Fetch can do for them.
There's more to do, and miles to go.
^EDIT: that's supposed to start 31 seconds in, at the point where he reads his poem.

Wait till you get your first puncture a LONG way from home, that will change your mind I reckon +1 for the cycle jersey (long sleeved please)5:28pm, 10th Nov 2021 -
Re navigation - I’m a Luddite and find a few OS map sheets, printed off bing or OS site, folded in an airport security poly bag, quicker and easier than phone maps.um
And my cheap muddy fox shirts have been fine.
Punctures? I’ve managed in recent years with slime tyres and Kevlar insert things. Not sure how much they help? Equally I have a hybrid bike with chunkier tyres.5:37pm, 10th Nov 2021 -
Hee hee! Welcome to the saddleRaptors claws are coming to town
I recommend carrying all the repair kit. Even if you don't know how to use it you'll look more credible when someone stops to help you. Learning to do basic repairs is of course even better.5:37pm, 10th Nov 2021 -
Nice to see you enjoying yourself and developing your cycling.Flatlander
Pump, spare inner tube (saves trying to fix a puncture in the wet, wind, cold and dark), puncture repair kit (in case you get a second puncture), tyre levers etc are essentials. I use puncture proof tyres which are really puncture proof and brilliantly reliable.
Cold - cycling makes the temperature feel like 5-10C lower that it actually is, especially for the fingers (watch out for your Raynaud's) and face, due to the quicker movement through the air.
Glad to see you are getting the hang of anticipating the correct gear to choose before you actually select it.
I'm not a fan of standing on the pedals to go up hills, choosing the appropriate lower gear and cadence should mean not losing momentum, and you can go just as fast as using higher gears and standing, plus it is less tiring. Standing is fine you you are attempting to do some hill power work using your quads and glutes.
I find that most road works crews are happy to let you go through closed roads providing you ask nicely and take care of whatever plant is there. Different if the road has been completely dug up though .
Drivers - I thank them for patiently waiting behind me before overtaking, or stopping behind parked cars on their side to let me through. They are supposed to do both those anyway, but I like to engender friendliness between drivers and cyclists.5:55pm, 10th Nov 2021 -

Good tyres are *almost* puncture proof, but best to still take a pump and tube. I get cold on my bike. I’m still in shorts and t shirt for running, but layering up on my bike with gloves, snood, hat under my helmet. Must be getting old because I don’t remember that when I was 15, maybe it was just warmer 40 years ago??Dillthedog6:04pm, 11th Nov 2021
Only 126 Fetchies have currently assigned their golden ticket!
If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, go see the Feature Requests page:
fetcheveryone.com/featurevoting
As well as voting yes or no to as many suggested features as you like, you can also pick out just ONE feature that would really make your day. It's easy to agree with / support people by upvoting their requests, but your golden ticket is precious.
If the list of choices is overwhelming, you can try sticking a keyword in the search box to filter the results.

Hi everyone.
On October 28th, we received the sad news that Banjobax had passed away, following a battle with Covid-19. His wife Fiona has told me that she'd like donations in his name to go to Fetcheveryone, and this morning, his mum Eileen has asked me to create a page where his friends and family can donate.
Katie and I spoke about this, and we agreed that we should use all those donations to do something to commemorate Stephen in some way. I don't know what form that will take yet, but I will be looking for your suggestions.
I've created a donation page, but I also thought it would be a nice place to collect our thoughts and memories of him. You are welcome to donate, but I know it would mean a lot to his family and friends if you could leave a comment to show just how many people he reached with his kindness.
Here's the page:
fetcheveryone.com/stephenbaxendale
EDIT I've added the details of Stephen's cremation to the page. It's at 11am on November 18th at Durham Crematorium, for anyone able to attend.

If you'd like some new home or away kit, the preorder is now open, and will be open until midday on Friday 12th November. The kit will then be with us by December 10th, and I'll get it packed up and sent out straight away.
I've added a long sleeve option too, as there were some requests for it. There's no image for that yet, sorry.
Ron Hill have put their prices up, because their raw material costs have increased. So unfortunately, I've had to increase the price of the shirts from £26 to £28, but I've kept the vests at £26 because they are slightly cheaper. The long sleeve version will be £32.
So if you'd like one, please get your preorder in by midday on Friday 12th November. I know some of you have spoken about wanting one, but needing to wait until the new year. If that's you, I don't mind putting one aside for you - place an order, but crucially please let me know your plan

A little competition - win a copy of Daniels' Running Formula
8:16am, 4 Nov 2021
If you've not seen this book before, it's a very useful insight into training methodology. It explains what each type of session (intervals, thresholds, long runs etc) does in terms of how it affects your body; and gives you guidance on the sort of paces you should be doing each session at.
On top of that, it gives you an understanding of how to arrange blocks of training to make sure you build throughout the year and are at your best on race day. And there are straightforward training plans too.
In all honesty, I can't say that I've read this new fourth edition, but I'm pretty sure it still has all the good stuff, and probably some new bits that might be useful too.
Full disclosure - they didn't pay me to say any of this. These are my own words. Bum. Willy.
There are two copies to win. Fill in your details on the HK website:
human-kinetics.co.uk
and leave a comment on this blog saying 'Me please' or somesuch. HK will pick a winner, and I will too.
EDIT: You can enter until 23:59 on Thursday 11th November 2021

@fetch - it's a convenience thing; the "plus" with a service like GC is that they are happy (and have the infrastructure) to share data to other platforms as they are just looking to add value to their physical sales products, so for me the ability to add weight in one place and have it pushed to other places where I'll then do more with it is quite important. Since I've had a watch that can do sleep tracking I've found myself digging into that at GC and I'd rather do it on here. In broad terms, I'd want GC to be the mechanism for collecting data, but here being the place to see it and use it, so the more that you can grab from places like GC the better as far as I can see. Not that any of it takes much time to do at my end, but I'm quite lazy!larkim8:23am, 4th Nov 2021

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions regarding grub stops (see my previous blog).
Now it's over to you again, to add your favourite stop offs:
fetcheveryone.com/poi.php
If you want to see an example, here's The Giddy Goat, which I highly recommend:
fetcheveryone.com/poi-location.php?id=638
One thing I didn't mention is that I've also added a little vote box at the bottom of each listing. If you've been to any of the POI's on the list, you can cast your vote. And if you vote, you appear on the visitor list - so folks know they can check in with you to find out more if need be.
I am really looking forward to seeing all your green dots springing up on the map. Each one a pilgrimage waiting to be made
Have fun!

I've added my favourite one - located off the road though, so only accessible for those on foot or on two wheels .......Schnecke8:41am, 3rd Nov 2021
On Saturday morning, Katie and I met up with Elsie Too for a walk through muddy fields in the rain. We parked up at The Giddy Goat, which is an awesome little cafe in a village called Riseley, just north of Bedford.
Post-walk, we sat in a cute little wooden pod, and I had an enormous breakfast for £7.50. Here I am about to push it all into my face hole:
We agreed that it'd be good to have a map of nice venues that are post- or mid-exercise friendly. Last time we were at The Giddy Goat, a peloton-ette of cyclists stopped for bacon rolls - and it looked like a pretty good idea.
There's some very similar functionality on the site. Did you know that there's a map of Open Water Swimming venues on FE? You can find it here:
fetcheveryone.com/poi.php
For the last 3-4 coding hours, I've been working on repurposing that code so that rather than being OWS-specific, it can now hold lots of different things - hence it's now called 'Points Of Interest'.
I really want to get grub stops added to it! The thought of it is making me hungry right now. If nothing else, it might be fun to plan cycle rides out to them. Any excuse for bacon. But I also thought they could serve as good meeting points for Fetchie meetups, whether that's runs, rides, walks or just to sit and push things into face holes
Before I go ahead, I thought I'd ask for your suggestions for the things you'd want to know about the venue. When it comes to swimming, it's all about changing facilities, the type of water, and how easy it is to clamber out.
Here's some stuff I've thought of:
1) exercise friendly e.g. do they mind sweaty arses on their seats, and can you keep an eye on your bike while you eat etc.
2) opening times
3) does the range include good options for vegetarian / vegan / those with food allergies.
4) indoor vs outdoor facilities - for weather purposes, and for those who are not comfortable being indoors with crowds.
The way I've built the form, there's room for select boxes (where you pick from a set of options), and free text boxes where you can type what you like.
Suggestions please I'll create the ability to add venues later on today.
EDIT And are there other types of points of interest you'd like to see?

Excellent idea! Would be a good idea to have a link to a Facebook page or website if they have one. One of the ones we use in the Summer is weather-dependent and updates their Facebook page if they're going to be closed.SarahWoo11:33am, 2nd Nov 2021

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was changing the way we get our training data from Garmin. They are retiring the old system in December.
I have everything in place, but I would like to move a few of you on to the new system to check that there are no issues, before I transfer everyone across.
Before you all volunteer, here are some things to consider:
1) the old system will stay active, so you should get two copies of your training, and you'll need to do some tidying up.
2) both will go to Conquercise, WSW, Fetchpoint etc, so it's probably best if volunteers are NOT avid players of any of these.
3) it'd be ideal if you are someone that logs something most days, so that I can get feedback sooner rather than later.
If you do volunteer, EDIT I will add you to the testing list and follow your training. If you notice any discrepancies between your two duplicate pieces of training, please leave everything in place until I've had a chance to look. /EDIT
I am not expecting any big issues. The old and new systems both deliver a FIT file to Fetcheveryone, and these are processed in the same way that they always have been. The only practical difference is that instead of them firing all the data at us as soon as they receive it, they just say "there's data here, come and get it". The Fetch server puts these notifications into a queue, so at busy times, there might be a slight delay whilst our server works through the queue - but I can fine tune that as we go along.
When I am happy that everything is ok, I can tell Garmin, and they'll pull the plug on the old system. Ta

Happy to volunteer and pretty much log something every day. Although I am registered for the games I don't really actively play so would be willing to withdraw from WSW and Fetchpoint; would like to keep Conquercise though.westmoors10:55am, 1st Nov 2021

Thanks wm. Both WSW and Conquercise should correct themselves once you delete any duplicate, so it should be ok - I was just being cautious. I'll add you to the new system. I'll follow you whilst we're in this test phase, so in theory I can see as soon as some stuff comes in without you needing to do a feedback.fetcheveryone11:00am, 1st Nov 2021

@Ness - thank you, I will add you too - and as I said to westmoors, you probably don't need to drop out of WSW, so long as maybe you don't upload training at 11.59am And anyway... you wouldn't score double points for visiting all the same squares on the same day, so I don't know what I was thinking about anywayfetcheveryone11:02am, 1st Nov 2021
