Here's where I got to today - this is generated from the data. The 'Top Performances' are sorted so that the best distances show first (so my 5k was considered my best performance, based on a rough approximation of WAVA). And I scrapped the yellow colouring for the calendar dots, in favour of another representation of which runs contained a bit of speed. Let me know what you think.

Yesterday I spent a bit of time in Photoshop working up a shareable graphic for the monthly summary. Here's where I got to:
The graphic for individual runs/rides etc have proven popular - so I thought this'd be another opportunity to give you something cool to share with people you know. It highlights some of the analysis that Fetch does with your data, and hopefully is reasonably pretty.
It's not in any way ready to use yet - it's just an image; but hopefully I'll be able to get it sorted within the next couple of working days.
This also means you've got the opportunity to steer my thinking with the way that it looks, and what is included. Nothing is ever finalised, so whatever I produce is not set in stone for ever - and it'd be good to get some other thoughts into my head

Month Rank - it was your 60th highest month (I think that means) but would that phrase imply something different to people from the orange site?9:44am, 31st Jul 2020 -
That's what I meant by it - but I genuinely don't know what the orange site does, so I'm not sure what you're saying. Guessing they give a ranking compared to others, like we do on the main Train page?fetcheveryone9:48am, 31st Jul 2020

I like it too, it shows almost everything I'd want to see at a glance in quite a user friendly view. Could you fit in the rank for best specific month too somehow? e.g.3rd best July.Gooner9:54am, 31st Jul 2020

I like. A lot. Can we squeeze average HR on there too without cluttering it? I think it strikes a good balance between data and readability now. There is enough on there that people will read it when I share it - which I will!Rrunner10:05am, 31st Jul 2020

Dio - I was playing about with trying to indicate where the 'trophy' times were recorded. Would be nice to have the trophies somehow have a connecting line through to the relevant date.fetcheveryone
Linds - when I paste the URL to Whatsapp, I get a cropped version of the graphic. It's a bit tricky because they want a square 256x256 image, whereas everywhere else seems to work best with a landscape format.
Gooner - not technically difficult, it's more about space. But I will know more when I get coding and can see how it looks with real data.10:07am, 31st Jul 2020 -
I like it. Agree about month rank, June and July have been higher than normal for me as there haven't been any racesSPR
Personally, I'd replacement benchmarks with something like longest run, number of races at different distances, and month best.
Or given races aren't happening and if the focus is training, how about a training category summary (a small version of what's on the log) so category, number of runs and pace.
I'm assuming the run colour coding is based on pace? Not sure how useful that is on its own given a reps session or progressive run could have the same average pace as a steady run.10:08am, 31st Jul 2020 -
Rrunner - I thought about that, plus also cadence analysis (e.g. avge cadence in each pace band; avge HR for each pace band). Like I said to Gooner, it might become clearer as to what I can fit, when I've got a code version working.fetcheveryone10:09am, 31st Jul 2020

I like it a lot. I think the stuff on the right is especially good 👍roberton
I agree month rank might be taken to mean "you did the 60th most of anyone this month". Rather than think of a way to name it differently, I'd be happy to drop that, I think this graphic is fine with just info about the month without any comparisons (well, unless it was best ever!)10:09am, 31st Jul 2020 -
Will there be one each for running, biking, swimming or can they be combined into an Uber-boast?Angus Clydesdale10:11am, 31st Jul 2020

SPR - regarding the categorisation, about 87% of the runs in the log during July are 'General', so a breakdown by category might not be useful for the majority. Do you mean the run colour coding on the calendar? If so, that's tied to the benchmarks (see my response to Dio).fetcheveryone10:13am, 31st Jul 2020

Roberton - I'll see where I get to with wordingfetcheveryone
Angus - I've got as far as planning three red-, green- and blue-background ones for run, bike and swim. Haven't begun to imagine the tri version yet, but I imagine it'll be pretty colourful10:16am, 31st Jul 2020 -
This is great. I'm not sure how cycling might fit in with this. Could there be an option to look at your month in cycling/swimming/walking separately?Ground HogFather10:22am, 31st Jul 2020
-
Fair enough Fetch, yes saw your reply to Dio after I posted.SPR
I think the needs to be a option to decide what is shown as a 'trophy'. I'm racing two 800m races in August but at the end of August my infographic will highlight my 5k, 5 mile, 10k and 10 mile training pace. Same applies when I run 1500m.10:26am, 31st Jul 2020 -
Also a fair point SPR - I slung those trophies in because they fitted with my data, but in theory a wider range could be available. And perhaps the choice could still be auto-generated, by using age grading to work out which of your trophies were comparatively most impressive. Worth noting though, that because they're benchmarks and not race data, it might not pick up an 800m track race all that accurately.fetcheveryone10:31am, 31st Jul 2020
-
G'hog - I'm planning on separate ones for run, bike and swim for now.fetcheveryone10:31am, 31st Jul 2020
-
Fetch - I the previous annual infographic did override with race data if you deleted the benchmark and corrected distance? My 5k was always race time there (I delete all track benchmark times). What I was missing there was 1500m times as a race benchmark.SPR10:41am, 31st Jul 2020
-
Yeah, the annual one does pull in race data. I'm working upwards from what I currently have in the monthly summary, but I think including race times would be very achievable.fetcheveryone10:47am, 31st Jul 2020

I like it but also got confused by the yellow circles. Maybe put a trophy image in those circles that matches the trophy image above to make it more obvious?Elsie Too11:13am, 31st Jul 2020

looks good, and I like the suggestion of showing the best performance based on age-grade to work out the trophies to show. One thing another site does is to show the amount of distance done on each day on th calendar by either using a darker shade of a certain colour for the circles for longer distances or by increasing the size of the circle as the distances go up so you can look at the calendar and no only see when you can but which were your most active days. That would be nice.chunkyblizzard11:52am, 31st Jul 2020

Would there be room to squeeze weekly mileage total at the end of each full week ? Or would it look weird when nothing there for partial weeks ?12:02pm, 31st Jul 2020 -
Like it. What percentage of people on the site measure cadence? Presumably those who don't will just get a 0 there. I've never looked at it as my watch doesn't record it. Or do you do some magic based on total steps and total time/distance?MisterTea

I've had a really pleasing month of running. I was initially tempted to go out again tomorrow for three miles, just so I could have my third-best-ever-July, instead of my fifth-best-ever-July. But I'm going to be sensible and stick to having a rest day. And the alternative headline instead of 'man runs fifth-best-ever-July' can be 'man runs highest mileage month for over a year'. I reckon in most circumstances, there's a good headline, if you're willing to find it
I've been chucking in a bit of faster stuff as well. Because, is why. And it led me to peer at my monthly summary page (the code for which is now a couple of years old).
My overall pace for July is a little bit slower than June (9:41/mi vs 9:39/mi). But the average for the month hides lots of stuff. Like scratching my head whilst orienteering, and having a few nice social runs with Katie. Or stopping to let people by so that they don't get you all virusy. Or needing a wee.
The little multi-coloured bar at the bottom of that first screenshot is a useful way to see past all the variation. But I felt like it deserved more detail. As well as a quick visual, I wanted to know how many miles I'd run in each zone too. So I've broadened it out into a table:
From this, I can see that I've totalled 10.5 miles at quicker than 8:30/mi pace this month, compared with 3.9 miles in June, and 1.1 miles in May. A nice pat on the back. Double figures speedy
This isn't about me willy-waving. Everyone's got their own average, and their own quick and slow. I reckon I'm at 'somewhere in the middle' at best. But it feels good to be able to see those little bits of quicker stuff add up. I hope you find it helpful too.
You can find your own monthly summary by going to:
Train > Summary & Analysis > Monthly Summary
fetcheveryone.com/training-month.php
I hope you've had a good July I'd like to give this page a lovely infographic, like the ones I've done for individual training entries - so that you can share it to show all those orange people what they're missing. But I'd like a lot of things, and right now, I need coffee.
Pip pip.

It appears that the Garmin servers are pumping out data again, which is great news. You might notice Fetch being a wee bit sluggish today, as we receive and process the backlog. Am monitoring it all, and will do my best to make sure we ride the wave
EDIT: Some numbers to add in...
Garmin pumping restarted at 6.32am this morning.
Since then, we've imported 5576 pieces of training, at a rate of about 1100 per hour.
The Fetchpoint queue currently has 1125 pieces of training waiting for processing
The 'Fetch Miles' queue currently has 1735 pieces of training waiting.
I will update as and when the incoming tide slows
EDIT: I've paused the Fetch Miles queue, as there's nothing relying on these - more of a 'nice to have' when the time comes. Hopefully that'll give the Fetchpoint queue some extra processing power.
EDIT: 11.20am, and the signs are that we've received the bulk of the backlog. 200 bits of training from 11am to 11.10am, and then 83 bits from 11.10am to 11.20am - so the rate of receipt looks like it's halved.
EDIT: Midday. Received 591 bits of training from 11am to midday, so things are starting to cool off. The Fetchpoint queue still has over 1000 entries, but they're getting processed as fast as they're arriving now

Scribs - it's a massive field, but here are some rules I try to play by:fetcheveryone
1) minimise what gets stored. Back in the day, sign up used to include first name and last name. No use for it, so get rid. If the server is ever compromised, the attacker would find as little as possible.
2) one way encryption. For example, only a mashed up version of your password is stored. When you log in, the mashing process is applied to the password you use - and it just needs to match the stored one. But "fluffykittens123" is not stored anywhere in plain text form, so if you use the same password elsewhere, it helps to mitigate the risk of further problems.
3) server-level security. One area where I bow to our hosting provider. They keep the server up to date with the necessary software patches and security certificates. It's something they take pride in, and one of the reasons why I have used them for 13 years.
4) never trust user input. Every place where you get the chance to enter some data, it has to be checked to make sure it matches what is expected.
5) take backups. Each day the database is backed up, and these backups are kept for a set number of days. If we've ever had a problem, the most to lose is 24 hours of data.
6) don't ever stop monitoring. It's a 'mice and mousetraps' situation - so every day is a school day.12:00pm, 27th Jul 2020 -

I've been trying to create a database of open water / wild swimming locations. There's a map now, and you can add locations to it. Here it is:
fetcheveryone.com/ows-map.php
To add a location, you can just click the map. There are 80 locations so far, but my research into the training log data suggests a heck of a lot more places where people swim. The biggest database of swimming locations that I know of online has about 500 locations - it'd be great to get more than that, and a nice way to bring people to the site.

Listeners of the podcast might know that I'm hoping to build a database of open water swimming locations.
My plan is to get this started by using training log GPS data to build a list of locations where OWS has taken place. Because I don't want to get myself or any swimmers into trouble, my starting point will be to build this list, but *only* make each location public when someone who has used that location gives their 'approval'. So if you've got a spot that you'd rather not share, that's cool. On the other hand, if it's a common spot, why not share?
Once I've got a list of locations, my plan would be to put these on a map - and to allow each of you to add some sort of review. For example - what are the facilities like (if any), what safety stuff is on hand, how easy to get in/out, etc.
Not sure when I'll get this sorted - it's all still a paper pipe dream at the moment. I hope that makes sense

I have added swims from beaches as well as the local reservoir swim. There are two locations where I can remember swimming which didn't come up. I can send training log entries for both if that would help. One a beach swim and the other a river in France.njosmith1:14pm, 24th Jul 2020
Today I've been building a search facility for threads.
Some early caveats: I know some of you would like the search to be as good as Google. That's not going to happen And there have also been some suggestions of embedding Google's search. I would rather not. The charging structure they introduced for Google Maps means that I'd rather not be at anyone's mercy.
Anyway... here's how you do it.
1) Go to a thread that you want to search.
2) Click the Search link in the thread topper
3) Search for what you want
4) Report back here to share your experiences
I am expecting some examples of how it can be broken - but that's how I do my testing, innit? I am interested to see how it gets used, because I can only ever build stuff in the way that makes sense to *me*, and you are *you*.

Two more suggestions - given that the search is working well.um
- could it be extended to search 'all my watched threads'
- but maybe with an optional date range so new hamsters aren't needed.1:18pm, 18th Jul 2020 -
1. Returning results in date order - doesn't seem to be working quite right.K5 Gus
As an extreme silly example I searched the Coronavirus thread for the word "the" - first result on page 1 ( and the first post as you'd expect ), second result on page 858, and every subsequent one up to the 40th in the 850's, but jumping up and down a bit.
2. If there are more than 40 results, can there be an indication that not all results have been returned ? And ideally, a Next button to show the next 40, etc
3. Like the above suggestion to be able to search all your watched threads, useful if you've read something somewhere but can't remember on which thread, but not as resource intensive as searching all threads.
4. Could you consider a future enhancement to have a second search criteria of author, as well as search term, would help narrow down a search when you remember who posted it6:47pm, 18th Jul 2020 -

Something to do with POSE running, shurely?!Angus Clydesdale9:05pm, 18th Jul 2020
So anyway. What a day.
The boy and I packed and labelled all of the second batch of Avoid Everyone shirts and vests; and I donned my safety balaclava and delivered them all to the excellent Long Eaton College Street Post Office. Fingers crossed for some arrivals tomorrow. In the first batch that we did a few months ago, one item took ***32*** days to arrive. Thankfully, the vast majority were much quicker than that.
My parents have put their house on the market. We moved here in 1984, and discovered that the curtains in the front room were nailed up. Curtains aside, it was a big project. My dad knocked off every bit of rendering, pulled down every ceiling, and pulled up every floorboard; whilst my mam turned the back garden from a basic lawn into the most diverse and colourful display, year after year. They ran their business from the building at the top of the garden, and have loved every minute. I'm not sad about it - they are ready to move on. Come for a look round - and feel free to put a bid in:
zoopla.co.uk
My day also involved finishing a bit of coding to update the 'sharing graphic' that is shown when you share one of your training entries on Facebook or Twitter. Rather than just a background image with a few stats on it, I wanted to turn the graphic into something that showcased a bit of what Fetch can do with your data. If you like the look of these, do please do some sharing of your own - it all helps to get people thinking about the site. Here's a few examples of a ride and a run I've done recently:

I wanted to address the current lamp post controversy that is sweeping through Fetch at the moment.
Here's the street where I grew up, from the age of about 2, til we moved a mile or so when I was about 8. My old house is on the left, just by that big van. Just out of sight on the right is my infant school. And centre stage, the first lamp post I was ever aware of being aware of.
As you can see, it's quite a beautiful wooden workhorse. Phone lines, potential power cables (or maybe just old Rediffusion cable - we had that in our house), signs and *crucially* a lamp. The one feature that is visible both day and night. Hence lamp post.
You're welcome.

it's not a telegraph pole as it's not carrying any phone lines. The diameter of those cables is too big for phone lines, they're 11kV power cables.Sigh12:46pm, 4th Jul 2020

Well it's an old installation, probably going back to when both the GPO and Electricity boards were state owned, so it's possible it's a combined use column/pole: but phone lines won't provide electricity to a pole mounted street light.Sigh1:42pm, 4th Jul 2020

4 years ago I wrote a comment about lamp posts on one of GlennR's blogs fetcheveryone.com/blog/14622/2016/7#blog354616 There could have been no confusion about whether the posts I mentioned were power or lamp posts, even although they were very old installations - because they were gas lamps!
I wrote
"I remember when I was a young child living in London, and the lamplighter coming along at dusk to light the street gas lamps. He'd prop his ladder up against the horizontal bars at the top of the lamp post, climb up and ignite the gas. Then he'd be back at dawn to extinguish them."3:17pm, 4th Jul 2020 -
