Evening all
After recording the podcast, I've spent most of today unpicking and rebuilding the code that imports FIT files. The old version struggles with multisport files, and it was knotted in with the GPX and TCX import code. The vast majority of training files arrive as FIT files these days (and FIT files get more detailed every time I open one), so I made the call to separate it out from the other two formats.
None of the changes are live yet, because it really is a critical part of the site, and therefore requires more testing than the usual "put it live and see what breaks" approach, which I reserve for stuff that won't go badly wrong if it goes wrong
If you can spare a minute, email one of your FIT files to fitfiles@fetcheveryone.com - especially if it's an interesting one, like a multisport, or one that you think might be good for tripping up my new importer. There'll be some things that this *hasn't* fixed, but I mainly just want to make sure that it doesn't break any existing stuff too - so anything is useful

My Garmin isn't fancy enough to do anything more interesting than just running, at least by design...While you're at it, though, I'll mention an annoying bug that I've seen on a couple of different Garmins in the past, in case you want to detect/handle it: sometimes, in the middle of an activity, the watch will randomly leap forward in time, anything from a few minutes, to days, or even years. Garmin Connect displays the activity as recorded, nonsense and all; the orange site refuses to import it; I'm pretty sure Fetch has, in the past, imported it to the point of the jump, but not beyond. It would be useful if I got a notification to say this but had been detected in an imported activity, so I can decide whether to manually correct it.I saw ishep come sailing in
I'm sure I could dig out an example file from my archive if you'd like7:05pm, 23rd Nov 2020 -

I think I've had three or four feedback messages over the last week or so to ask if I have any Fetch merch for sale in the run up to that there winterfest.
After some resistance on my part, I've been thinking about getting the mugs out of the Fetch cupboard. I had them printed a couple of years back, when we were doing a bit of travelling round for Fetch Miles. I've always held back from putting them up for sale, because I felt like the post and packaging would be a bit of a nightmare.
Anyway... I've decided to give it a go, in the hope that I don't have to do a bunch of refunds for smashed mugs. I've found some polystyrene cases that will hopefully travel nicely through the post.
Before I order those, I just wanted to check whether there's actually any interest in owning a Fetch mug. I was thinking of selling them for £12.50 - that's about £4.50 for posting, and £8 for the Fetch-wants-a-solid-gold-toilet fund. That price seems to be inline with the cost of similar mugs (inc P&P) on Amazon etc.
If you want one at that price, please leave a comment below, and if I go ahead I'll drop you a line on a first-come, first-served basis. If I remember rightly, I think I have about 20-30 of the mugs. Here they are:

We have no clue who it came from - but whoever you are, thank you very much. It's lovely, and will be the first thing on our tree this year! Being in the midst of this wonderful community is something that I am truly grateful for. It's all been beyond anything I could have imagined - and if there is a better job out there, I can't imagine it. Except maybe chief jelly taster. But you'd get sick of that eventually, I'm sure.

We watched The Queens Gambit on Netflix recently - and it inspired me to get a chess app (the Chess.com one) on my phone. I haven't seen any chess pieces on the ceiling yet, and I haven't developed a tranquilliser addiction, so hopefully that will continue.
As a kid, I watched the 'Play Chess' series on TV in the eighties, and had a board. I played a bit with other kids in school, but never competitively or anything like that. I remember one time, my grampa took me to a place in Bargoed called The Settlement - there was a chess club there, populated entirely by men who all seemed to be about a hundred years old.
I played a game against one of the blokes. In my hazy recollection, he was some sort of wild-bearded Digory's Uncle chess genius - but in reality he was probably just humouring the kid who turned up with his grampa. I didn't turn out to be a talented wonder child - I think he let me play for a bit, and then gave me a crushing. He taught me how to fork with my knight (largely by doing it to me). I don't think I ever went back - but I still remember the heavy weighted Staunton pieces, bigger and more permanent than my plastic pieces and cardboard board at home.
I've enjoyed getting my older head round it - and I've even just started reading a book called 'Logical Chess: Move by Move' by Irving Chernev. In chapter 1, it has walked through a game between two pros, outlining the reasoning behind each move as it's made. I've followed up to a point, but with only the occasional diagram, it's hard to recollect the state of the board after a series of moves. I think I will try to get hold of a board to see the game happen - maybe with those nice heavy Staunton pieces
It's been fun playing the app too. The virtual opponent has chess ratings, and I have beaten it 9 times out of 10 when it's set to 1200. I haven't tried upping it to 1300 yet, but that hopefully means I'm not a total dunce
EDIT I am now on Chess.com as 'fetcheveryone' - so if you play and want a game, look me up. Fetch Chess Club? That could be a thing

I watched the series over the weekend. Learnt chess when I was 12, broke my leg at start of secondary school so it was one of the things I did when I couldn't move around much. Played on and off every so often since then but not really consistently. Openings was always something I struggled with probably because it seems the different lines are just memorised rather than 'seen', was ok in middle game and end game at the level I played anyway. @Fetch - I'm no expert on them but the lines between them are blurred. I just know it's easy to make a silly mistake in the first 10-20 moves.SPR
It's definitely easier to see what to do if you can get to a point where there are fewer pieces on the board in good shape.

I am the only person in the history of the Knox Academy Chess League to play himself and lose. Of course, that means I won as well, but it was only the loss that was recorded. In three years of play, once a week every week of term I recorded a nearly perfect losing record. I won one game, once, against Stephen Gordon who was so embarrassed he didn't come back for three weeks.RichHL

I'm one of the wizened old boys who's played for years, and who formed most of the membership of over the board clubs. These are now all mothballed because of the pandemic, so some of these players are playing online. Also with a lot of new players coming on board because of being locked up at home there's a lot more interest now which I'm pleased to see. It seems like the Queen's gambit has helped too though I haven't seen it yet.BrianJ11:57pm, 20th Nov 2020

The UTMOST game is one of our sleeping giants. I first made it in 2012 - it stands for UnTradeMarked Optimum Sporting Trophy. There were strict publishing guidelines back then - no mentioning that big sporting event happening in the capital city. No mentioning the 'O' word. No using the same colours as the rings. You couldn't even say "London" and then say "2012" without the threat of a branding agency lawyer getting in touch, unless you flung half a dozen words in between. At least that was what my employers were keen to impress upon me.
Anyway... it's been a sleeping giant - in fact, since COVID, it's been a bit comatose.
The game *was* based around getting good race times (remember races?) to score points against the other players in your division, with the aim of getting promoted.
I think I've done two races this year, and one of those was the Doctor K cup. I know some of you have probably done more - but it doesn't make for the most exciting of competitions if some of the competitors can't actually add to their tally.
So (sorry Sharkie), I've adjusted the game, so that it now takes your Fetch Benchmarks into account. This means that at any point (assuming you've got clothes on), you can head out your door with a GPS, and attempt to nudge your way up the table.
I've also taken the opportunity to reallocate divisions to all the existing players to make each one reasonably competitive.
It'd be good to see more of you signing up - you'll start in the bottom division (currently division 17), but there's weekly promotion, so you should be able to make your way up to a decent spot relatively quickly.
And, once the changes have settled, my plan is to make some badges, that you can earn by getting promoted etc.
Here's the game link:
fetcheveryone.com/utmost.php
May the odds be ever in your favour!

I've spent this week beavering away on the new version of the annual infographic. It's coming along nicely, or as we say back home, it looks tidy. I am pretty excited to show that off, but I need to sort out a few more bits of the puzzle.
It occurred to me that it'd be pretty awesome if the infographic could be produced in multiple languages. We've got quite a few European users now, more than a few Welsh speakers, and even some Americans!
If you'd be willing to help me translate the words on the infographic into whatever language it is you can speak, that'd be great. When it comes down to it, I'd send you a list of the little snippets I need translated (there are currently 18 little titles on the infographic e.g. 'Pace Breakdown', plus the three letter abbreviations of the months of the year), and that'd be it.
Then, if you want to show off the infographic to your fellow [insert language here] speakers, you could just choose it from a list of the available options, and the graphic would be generated with the appropriate wording.
Leave me a comment if you can help. I know I could probably fudge it with google translate or something like that, but did you know that the Welsh word for supermarket translates literally as 'coffin market'?

Cool, I love these graphics. By comparing ours I can see that you have run 237 more miles than me so far this year, yet I have completed over 7000 metres more than you in ascent. I guess that also means I've done a similar amount more going down.Diogenes1:39pm, 10th Nov 2020

The "mark unread" isn't actually useful yet - there's no visible trigger for the reader to be reminded that they want to come back to it later (you'd have to remember to visit the blogs page and check green ticks, which I don't think is how most people manage their blog reading. Plus it's only there for a couple of days before it drops off the bottom).paul the builder
