There's a new graph on your training plan (and on all of the ready-made plans). It shows a seven day rolling mileage total. Thanks to anyonebutmatt for the feature request - I hope this will replace your spreadsheet now
Here's the P&D 'less than 55miles a week' marathon plan, to give you an example:
I think it's a really nice visual of the volume of the plan - the slopes and peaks of various popular plans are interesting to look at, and indicate when you might expect to feel the fatigue building. They also serve as a useful reminder that if you want to get yourself ready for an event, you need to make sure you're ready to start the plan too! The P&D example above expects 32 miles in week 1, and it doesn't get any easier
You can import any of the pre-made plans to your own planner, and if you need to drag the sessions around, the graph there will update each time. So if you're like me and don't have a specific day of the week for each type of session, it's a really handy way of keeping an eye on any big spikes in training volume.
Go for a play with your plan here:

Feature request 422 asked for: "the ability to create a training plan as a no date needed template as per the ready made plans and be able to drop the sessions from that template into my plan diary. Essentially giving me a training session library to drag and drop sessions from"
I've been making some adjustments to the training plan to make this achievable.
My own training tends to follow a vaguely fortnightly pattern, because I have time with my boy (he enjoyed all the comments on the previous blog, thank you) every other week.
So I used the training plan to put together my usual fortnight of training, with long runs, tempos, easy runs and my weekly swim - all adjusted to fit my fortnightly pattern. I then used 'Save Section' to save this mini plan - and because it's no use to anyone else, I've left the new 'public' checkbox unticked.
Now I can use the 'Load Plan' button, and pick out any of the plans I've created (or any of the public ones) and bung them into the relevant date.

The Boy has been challenged by a school friend to see which of their group can run the fastest 5k. Apparently, there's a £5 prize
He plotted out a route, and went last week, and got 30:21. When I got him from school today, we decided to have another go at it. I lent him a pair of my trainers (ones that he designed, ages ago - remember those?), and we did an out and back on the canal.
The first 3k was great, and it was only a couple of walks in the next two km that slowed him down a little. He got 28:11 by his watch Really hoping he carries on!
Here he is, just seconds after finishing:

When I added the training plan as a feature, many many moons ago, I made the call to store planned training in the same database table as the training log (User, Date, Category, Distance, Time, Notes, etc).
It made sense. At the time, the only difference between log and plan was whether the date was in the future or the past. I even added a 'isLogged' flag to reinforce which entries were planned and which were 'logged'.
But every coding choice means that future decisions and future code have to fit in with this manifestation of the Fetch universe.
It was fine for a while. Every database query that grabs your training checks the date, and the 'isLogged' flag, to differentiate between past and future.
And then things change. It's October 21st as I write this, but in some parts of the world it's October 22nd already. And people are logging their training. Our friends in NZ and Australia were seeing runs shunted into their training plans just because of the time difference. And as database tables get bigger, the more flags you have to check, in order to get the data you want, the slower the results.
Today I separated out the training plan data into its own table. It makes things a whole lot simpler. Sessions from the plan won't automatically transfer into the training log any more (although the daily notifications will now tell you what you need to do). And I'll also put together a page that allows you to review your back catalogue of planned training for reference. And users who are already enjoying tomorrow should be able to view their latest training data in their logs (or if not, shout out and I'll debug with your help).
All this came about because my goal is to revamp the training log database table. I want to be able to allow hours, mins and seconds for training start time; to make walking a top-level training category; to allow surfaces that work for swimmers, not just runners; to reshape some stuff that most people don't use any more (like hilliness, surface, feeling). And to get rid of some of those old decisions that have forced a shape onto the Fetch landscape.
Sorry if that didn't make sense

I don't use the Training Plan, but presumably this change will affect us in a roundabout way: currently, when our Garmins do their little time travel bug thing (doesn't happen often, but they sometimes jump into the future in the middle of an activity), we know that has happened by looking in the training plan when a new activity doesn't appear in the calendar.I saw ishep come sailing in

Interesting insight, love reading this sort of stuff. One by product of the change though is that it seems I can no longer click on the detail of the training scheduled for today - e.g today it says 9m run and it's called tempo. But what the split of that session is I can't reveal! Not a real urgent issue as I know where I got the plan from, but suspect the changes you're making to make the plan reviewable historically would sort this out.larkim7:04am, 22nd Oct 2020

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Doctor K Cup!
I really enjoyed putting all my effort into my run, all the while hoping that I might be able to make sufficient improvements to my recent 5k time to get close to my prediction. As I worked through the effort and the discomfort, I thought about the people we have lost, and felt grateful to be running and determined to keep my effort up. I managed to improve my time a little, which I was pleased about - but not enough to put me in contention for a podium spot.
It was great fun to see the times coming in, and to see the leading margin get smaller and smaller. Congratulations to Tooms and SooWoo who appear to be our leading prophecy-makers. The Fetch Benchmarks actually store times to several decimal places, so in theory I could work out a winner - but I’m happy to say that they both deserve the winners accolade.
I also really enjoyed seeing all the pictures flooding the gallery. My hope is that it made some people smile, and that we can make our day of remembrance a special thing each year.
There’s room for improvement too. The benchmark system only produces a 5k result if you’ve run at least 5000 metres - and seven eager beavers fell foul of this algorithmic ruthlessness, stopping their watches just a few metres short of glory. It comes down to number rounding. A watch that shows miles to two decimal places can still be 8 metres short of the magic 5000m. This is why I asked people to stick a bit extra onto their runs just to be sure. On seeing some unhappy faces on the day, I extrapolated times from those that were just a smidge short, and will be sure to make the guidelines more prominent next time!
And I hope there will be a next time, because this opened things up to people running every distance, no matter where they were. A couple of folks in the top 10 included this as part of a 10 mile run, whilst kink bunny and Groundhog made predictions as part of marathons!
I’d also like to give a shout out to D2 and Bigleggy (and probably others that I have missed). D2 said that she wasn’t running, but was remembering. And Bigleggy was isolating at home, so he was running on his treadmill. The way I’d coded the results-generation process meant that the lack of GPS did not give him a time. But he just wanted to pay his respects, and that’s exactly what the day was all about. Thank you both, and to everyone who took part.

If one of the items on your bucket list is to be bought and sold like a pumpkin, then this is the blog for you!
Our Trader game gives would-be pundits the opportunity to buy and sell runners, with the goal of earning credits if the value of that runner increases. The value of a runner is just their 90 day mileage total, so a wise trader researches the mileage and future plans of the tradable runners, or follows up on tips in the ticker!
Anyone can be a trader, but there are only 400 places available for tradable runners. And 390 of those are filled already!
To become tradable, go to the game page, and then into the 'Settings' tab:
fetcheveryone.com/trader-settings.php
If you're not already tradable, you should find a link there to join the waiting list. If you're in the lucky first ten, you'll become tradable at midnight tonight. If not, you'll be in the queue, and reliant on the value of one of the existing tradable runners dropping to zero.

Ah races, do you remember those?
Feature requests 586, 530, 376 and 907 all asked for some updates to the 'Pre-Race Distance' page. Specifically, they all related to being able to compare *any* of your races, not just the ones where you got best times or best WAVA's.
Here's the before and after shot, mobile view:
There's a new title, trimmed text, a bit of re-ordering (the table of data appears above the graph, not below), and a few mobile-friendly tweaks for narrower screens. But mainly, please take note of the bin icons next to each race, and the green box that allows you to add any of the races from your portfolio.
EDIT: Here's a link to the page: fetcheveryone.com/training-prerace.php

Is there a way that rather than having pre-defined race distances (5km, 5 mile, 10km, etc) that you could select distances you've raced (800, 1500, 3000 for example)?SPR
It looks like I can manual select the races but want the option to initially pre-populate.4:13pm, 13th Oct 2020 -
Nice. Mild bug (I think) in that if you add another race, and then subsequently change the period over which the graph should show, then it produces nothing. I think the URL is a clue as it includes "distance=0" when it should be either "distance=[previouslyselecteddistance]" or "races=[raceref]" fetcheveryone.com/training-prerace.php?distance=0&unit=miles&weeks=15 This is just what I was after though! Following on from Larkim's comment, would be happy to edit the distance in the URL for now. Just need metres enabled as an option...SPR

I might be doing something wrong here, so humour me! I want to see the graph of my marathon build ups including my more recent DNS / DNFs, but only over the last 12 weeks. So I click on marathon, click on the drop down for 12 weeks, all looks fine. Then I click to select a race and it reverts back to 26 weeks as a graph. Is that just me using it wrong!?larkim4:24pm, 13th Oct 2020

Nice, however the "choose by best WAVA" does nothing for me. By which I mean it doesn't appear to alter anything whether or not it's selected, rather than that it doesn't fill me with joy.Fitz6:20pm, 13th Oct 2020

Have you got rid of the really really old race comparison? It's one of the reason I hadn't actually moved across to the new one as I could see all my track stuff there. Obviously can see it here now so that fine but IIRC correctly it had a session type breakdown which I'm pretty sure I used in 2018 to diagnose that the reason why my 5000m pace wasn't where I thought it would vs my best at the time was because I hadn't done as many progressive runs. Is this type of analysis available somewhere else? The pace breakdown used on annual/ monthly summary would normally cover most things but it's harder with something like progressive because of the pace change.SPR6:57pm, 15th Oct 2020

This Saturday it's the fourth edition of the Doctor K Cup. It's our annual run in memory of Fetchies we have lost. It's named after Doctor K, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2017. We also run for Devonian Plodder, Big Dom, Tigerlily, Supergran, Pricey, Steady Edina, and spikeyboy.
The challenge requires you to predict your time over 5k, and then trying to run that exact time, but without looking at your watch at any point throughout.
Doctor K was a big parkrun fan, and so we've usually done this using parkrun times. This year, because of the pandemic, we're using your GPS times (sorry non-GPS users!). It means you can run wherever and whenever you like on Saturday. And so long as you run at least 5000 metres, the Fetch Benchmark system will pull out your fastest 5k. I saw at least one Fetchie from this week who ran about 4,996 metres - and therefore did not get a time - so please make sure you go a little bit over-distance!
It doesn't matter if you want to run 20 miles on Saturday. Just predict your fastest 5k, and the benchmark system will do the rest.
At the request of my lovely wife, the results will also pick up training entries logged as Cross Training > Walking - so you can walk too if that's your thing.
I've built a results page that will collate all your performances on the day. And just to illustrate how it'll look, I've used your data from the Saturday just gone, and produced some dummy results. You can see them here:
fetcheveryone.com/doctorkcup.php
We've already tripled the number of entrants that we had last year, but it'd be great to get as many people involved as possible. All you need to do is add the following race to your portfolio, and then log your training with a GPS device (watch or app) this coming Saturday:
fetcheveryone.com/races/the-doctor-k-cup-4861504
Remember to turn off all your beeps, pace alerts etc, anything that would give you an unfair advantage.
The person who is closest to their prediction will be declared the winner, although the judges (me and Joopsy probably) will have the final say if there's any whiff of shenanigans! Which there obviously won't be, because you're all lovely.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the comments on my previous blog. I've given my friend the link so he can read them all. He was grateful for all the input, and says the suggestions not to do it are probably very good advice. As for encouraging him to do a marathon on the type of timescale he's planning - no, I certainly haven't. I've just tried to help - he's a grown-up and makes his own decisions. I'll let you know how he gets on in a future blog
Other news... a few weeks back, I showed off my Raspberry Pi plant watering system. It's been set up and running for a month now, and I'm pleased to report that the plant I bought to experiment on is yet to perish. In fact, it's doing pretty well:
It gets a 2 second squirt of water every day at 9am. All I've got to do is keep the reservoir topped up - and that's made easier by the fact that it's in my field of vision when I'm at my desk!
Continuing the watery theme, I'm just back from my weekly swim. Later than usual, because the boy is having an hour at his gf's house. There were more srsbsns swimmers there than the normal lunchtime slot. I know this because they had drinks and bits of foam. But I got to be the swimmer that got in the pool first, so the water was all flat - that's pretty cool. Five swims in five weeks now
How are you?

@D2 - the time was just a guess, but in theory the quantity is consistent-ish. I did some testing (see my blogs from a month or so ago), running the pump for longer periods to get an average volume per second. I guess it varies by how much uphill work the pump has to do; and the more water in the vessel, the more pressure on the water in the tube. Maybefetcheveryone9:27pm, 8th Oct 2020

Our leisure centre pool has been open for a month or two and we 'may' be re-starting my swimming club's Sun eve sessions. But we've got to canvas our members to gauge interest as it's large pool only, lane swimming for a max. 25 people and there's no sauna or steam room. Lots of them like to lounge around in the shallow end or sit in their hot room of choice so there's probably a limited interest in actually having to swim constantly. At least with my swim club, the lack of changing facilities isn't a problemWtnMel12:56pm, 9th Oct 2020

I know when people say "asking for a friend", they mean themselves - but in case you are wondering, I genuinely am asking for a friend No really
Anyway, this friend of mine is a keen swimmer, and pretty good at it by the sounds of things - so he's probably pretty fit generally. When the pools closed because of *thing*, he started doing a bit more running. Initially, he was doing a few 5k runs each week.
More recently, he's progressed to longer runs. He's got a sub-50 10k under his belt, and has run some half-marathon distances, and a longest run of (I think) about 16 miles.
He's been talking about doing a marathon. I've been generally encouraging, as it sounds like he's very capable, and he's enjoying pushing himself. After London was on the telly on Sunday, he got thoroughly bitten, and decided that he wanted to enter one. I suggested the possibility of Newport in the spring, because I'm already signed up to that (touch wood).
He's signed up to the virtual New York marathon, which is this month! And has asked me what sort of training he needs to do in the next ten days to prepare himself Since then, he's relented slightly, and has pushed his attempt back a week. So there's a max of 17 days to go now.
What's your advice?
For reference, mine was to:
1) do a 'test flight' long run pretty soon, just to see how far you can get, so you know whether it's realistic. With no heavy training schedule behind him, he doesn't need to taper to regain freshness, so if he gets it done soon, he can have a crack for real in another 10 days.
2) Be prepared to walk.
3) Book the following day off work and don't plan on using the stairs.
4) Practice fuelling and fluid intake on that test flight.
5) Don't come running to me etc
What would you suggest?

WS's #6 When were his HM/ 16 miles? Can't have been that long ago. Maybe do the French* long run of 30 km? Slowly. Do a couple of shorter runs below MP to get used to the pace. I'm presuming that as a relative newbie his "easy" runs (if there are any!) are not easy enough. Most importantly, on the day, don't run the first half at HM pace.Dvorak

Get another 16-miler under his belt in the next few days then start tapering. On the day, go off at least a minute per mile slower than his half marathon distance training runs, expect it to be a bit of a grind towards the end, and start eating and drinking early. I ran with a friend on Sunday she’d done a marathon last year but had trained for it. This year she barely ran early part of year and almost not at all since March until about 8 weeks ago when I said I’d join her for the mara. She only went to 8.5m with me 5wks ago.geordiebells
So what you have 100% esp making sure he picks the kit he’ll wear and wear it for his training runs from indies out!
Body glide / Vaseline for potential chaffing
Fuelling 100% key this mara was my first time nailing fuel and the difference was unreal. Same with hydration. I find too much sweet stuff kills me so testing it now is important.
Try to get him to think of it as a distance PB.... with a time expectation he may well do a 4hr marathon but setting out with say a 4hr aim and needing to walk more can give negative thoughts. Much better to work in even 6hrs and smashing a sub 4.5hr. My friend worked on the route and expected times at each meet up point she massively understands estimated how long and from mile 9 was behind in her eyes and it really impacted her mindset.1:18pm, 7th Oct 2020 -
As you suggested but 3 days before his attempt, start drinking more water, add or swap a meal for a pasta based meal. As mentioned above run slower than his longest run.Festive Flier1:31pm, 7th Oct 2020

Join the best running website around (it won't cost him anything unless he chooses to contribute) and write a blog asking for advice. He could even put that he is asking for a friend if he wishes. Or start a thread in the forum. Then write a blog about how it all went as well and feel the Fetch love all around him. Then buy the bloke who runs the website a pint - or bung him a few quid through the site to let him do so.......BaronessBL1:56pm, 7th Oct 2020

Agree with EdJ's advice about making sure beforehand that his clothing and footwear are spot on.Raptors claws are coming to town
I wonder if this chap has a friend - a friend who genuinely believes he can succeed and wants him to succeed - who would be willing to support him on marathon day.2:19pm, 7th Oct 2020 -
Essentially he’s got a week to train in and a week to recover/taper before the event. I’d say one, maybe two, longer runs, a couple of miles longer than his regular run distance. In the taper week cut back to 80% of regular effort. There is little to gain by wellying out an excessively long run now, more to lose by getting over fatigued or injured.Nightjar2:38pm, 7th Oct 2020

Kit and shoes are paramount. Blisters, chafing and / or bleeding nipples are are real pain or even threat. Sounds to me like he can do it 👍🏼Derby Tup3:21pm, 7th Oct 2020

It's you, isn't it? It is, it is. If it's you, just take it easy and enjoy. Nothing that can be done in 17 days will help physically anyway. That's why it's taper time - ! If it isn't you and the person hasn't done a marathon ever before then just read about it, and get someone to be ready to hand them fuel and catch them at the end, cos it's gonna hurt! GMerry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)3:26pm, 7th Oct 2020

I'm not sure what his rush is to do one in the next few weeks, but each to their own. If he has his heart set on doing one sooner rather than later remind him to eat and drink before he feels like he needs to during the run, pick a pace that feels ridiculously easy and then run a bit slower than that, trim toenails (but not too close to the day of the run), buy some Compede plasters in advance (just in case), don't get to 26.2 miles and immediately sit down - a bit of slow walking while drinking and getting something to eat might help with the inevitable stiffness, remember it is supposed to be fun, be able to recognise the difference between 'this is sore because I am doing something really hard' and 'this is sore because I am injured'HowFar?3:40pm, 7th Oct 2020

Has he got a friend, or friends to support him? As in drinks & feed points, so he doesn't have to carry much, if anything. And maybe partners for (eg) miles 15-20 and 20-end ?um
And a rescue plan if he really does crumble at any point ? Sometimes it can make sense to decide to DNF rather than break yourself completely?4:40pm, 7th Oct 2020 -

I signed up for vVMLM with only 24 days notice (but was already training for a half in September) I just added a 16 miler, and an 18 miler at T minus 21 and T minus 14 respectively, did a 2 week taper, ate and drank plenty in the last 3 days and got around fine. Nothing new on race day and aim to finish & enjoy it! I’m running again 3 days after my first marathon so it is possible :Dchristmasmental9:50pm, 7th Oct 2020
-
Some great advice. Mine is simple. Target is just to finish (no time). Kit is key, as is glide/taping dodgy areas. Fuel/hydration - take it seriously. Time on feet (walking is fine) as getting used to moving for 4+ hours is key. Run on tired legs, back to back days are great or double run days. I did no specific training for vVLM, RTS helped, running when I really didn't want to. Enjoy it, take in the scenery, chat, smile, don't look at watch.FunkyPOM11:35pm, 7th Oct 2020
-
I wouldn't bother with another long run at this point - there will be little training benefit so close to the event, and a number of downsides from tiredness, demotivation if it goes badly, through to injury. Also don't get hung up on the easting pasta / carb loading, just stick to a sensible diet with enough calories not to have a deficit and plenty of liquids and electrolytes.flanker12:18am, 8th Oct 2020

Have a bit of respect for the distance, and maybe train for it, rather than formulate a coping strategy. There are 12 week plans and 16 week plans, and to just knock one out is a bit rude.... IMHOMazH9:11am, 8th Oct 2020

Sorry to be the realist but this is why people get hurt and lose the love of running.
Too much too soon.10:22am, 8th Oct 2020 -
It's not the best idea but if he's absolutely committed to the idea then he needs to be prepared to walk a lot and hurt a lot more both on the day and for several days afterwards. He could easily train for a marathon in the spring and would probably absolutely nail that.RichHL11:54am, 8th Oct 2020

I've been making some adjustments to the Trader game. You can find it here:
fetcheveryone.com/trader
My first job was to fix an obvious loophole. Previously, the values for the tradeable runners was calculated using their total mileage from the last 90 days, excluding the current day. This meant that it was pretty easy to make a profit, just by looking at whoever had done a long run on a given day, buying them, then selling them again the following day.
I've adjusted that now, so that runners' values are updated almost instantly. I've been doing a bit of trading as I've gone along, and I've found it's a useful strategy to look back at the last few months of a runner on the rise, and see whether they're about to lose a low mileage month from their 90 day total. Similarly, you can look to see who's got an ultra coming up - they might have tapered, but buy them just before race day and they should reward you with points.
I've made a few layout adjustments, and done some tidying up, based on some of the Feature Requests relating to the game. NB if you'd prefer dark text on white, there's a new option in the game settings. I've also added the FESE100 and FESE250, so you can watch how the Fetch Stock Exchange is doing as a whole. Saying 'FESE' makes me smile
One thing I haven't done yet is to add some new tradeable runners - and I know some of you are keen on being tradeable. When I first made the game at the start of 2018, I invited all the runners who had clocked 700+ miles in 2017 to join. I'd like to come up with a system that allowed about a dozen new runners to join the tradeable list each month. Obviously they need to be running reasonably regularly - but at the same time I don't want to exclude people. Still mulling that one over.
Oh, and did I mention that there are badges! A whole 14 badges. Mostly for trading (good and bad), but also a few for tradeable runners too. Because of that big rule change I mentioned at the start, the badges are only available to those people who have joined or 'reset' their game. You can reset in the game settings.
Happy Trading!

My only issue is a decision problem with resetting or not - but that's down to me and me dodgy traits 😂9:00am, 4th Oct 2020 -
It is a job and no mistake, bonners. The thing that keeps knocking on my mental door is going back to a 1000 credits and making Trader life so simple😊. I think that'll be the thing that pushes me there in the end.Wezza1:27pm, 4th Oct 2020
